breeding places,on the first place students are expected to come from
Mersin,Hatay, Niğde, Adana, Osmaniye, Konya, Karaman, Aksaray,
Kahramanmaraş and from other provinces. Another advantage of
this programme is that it is possible for those who work in health
sector to get the title of ‘Laboratory Technician’ and be promoted.
5. EMPLOYMENT OF GRADUATED STUDENTS
Livestock businesses, animal feed factories, agriculture businesses,
private veterinary clinics that are placed in this area will provide
opportunities for employment. There are still many livestock
businesses that are active in Mersin. Most of these are focused on
the dairy farming. As it is well known, dairy farming is a labor
intensive field and it requires veterinary services. Sometimes,
businesses that are operating in Mersin are requesting graduated
students from our Vocational School of Technical Sciences that are
eligible to work on their field and we cannot meet their demands.
It is obvious that veterinarian technician is needed in the field.
6. Graduated students from this programme will be named as
“Laborant and Veterinary Health Technician”
7. They can work in field of preventive medicine where there
are no veterinarians. They work with veterinarians in the field of
animal health, breeding, production and improvement. The also
work with agricultural engineers in animal breeding, production
and improvement. They are employed in Provincial Agricultural
Directorates, municipalities,slaughterhouses, Meat and Fish
Establihment, establishments of the General Directorate of Agricultural
Enterprises, private veterinary clinics and consultancy institutions.
They can build their own animal farms.There is a need for qualified
staff in this sector, and sector organizations demend staff in this field.
8. A) Programme Proficiencies
a. To ensure the regular operation of the laboratory equipment
and to use it effectively,
b. To apply laboratory hygiene and safety consciously,
c. Taking microbiological, biochemical, parasitological, pathological
and feed samples, processing and applying necessary tests,
d. To apply hygiene, care and health services as veterinary assistants
in animal hospitals, private veterinary clinics and farms,
e. To apply measures related to prevention from epidemics,
infectious and zoonotic diseases,
f. To be able to determine the mating time of animals and to carry
out artificial insemination under the responsibility of overage and
veterinarian, to recognize and follow normal and pregnancy and
birth processes,
g. To bring the efficiency of the operator to the highest level by
providing the necessities of animal welfare,
h. Taking preventive measures and informing the veterinarian on time
about the important problems of animals, fertility, breast and foot health,
I. To ensure proper care and feeding of animals,
j. To be able to apply the treatment protocols recommended by the
veterinarian,
k. To use the registration and archiving system in laboratory and
veterinary health field,
l. To be able to have scientific formation and team work on
professional and social ethical values.
B) Number of credits and training course
Students who want to graduate from this program must complete
120 AKTS within 2 and 4 periods of time. And, The internship
period is 40 (fourty) business days.
9. Internship period is is obligatory in this programme. Students
don’t have problems in finding places to accomplish their
intership period,and studies on this issue are alos being carried
on. We are in cooperation with enterprises engaged in agricultural
and animal husbandry in our city, with the Chamber of Mersin
Veterinary Surgeons, with private veterinary clinics ,and with
Mersin Breeding cattle Association. Also students may complete
this period in their hometowns.
