Connecting a MIDI DeviceRecording MIDI data typically involves connecting a keyboard, a drummachine, or another MIDI device as an input to your Pro Tools system.Before starting to record, you should verify that the MIDI device you will usefor input (also called a MIDI controller) is connected to your system throughan input on your MIDI interface or a USB port on your computer, ifapplicable. You might also need to connect a MIDI output from your interfaceas a return to this device or as an input to a separate MIDI device, such as asynthesizer, for monitoring and playback purposes.Example: For basic recording, you can connect a MIDI cable from theMIDI Out port on the back of a keyboard to the MIDI In port onan Mbox or similar interface. For monitoring and playbackpurposes, you can also connect the MIDI Out port of the Mboxto the MIDI In port on the keyboard (assuming onboard soundcapabilities) or to a separate synthesizer unit.Tip: Connecting a MIDI device to Pro Tools with a USB cable providesboth MIDI input and MIDI output for the device.Checking MIDI Inputs/OutputsOnce your MIDI device is connected, you will need to configure the inputsand outputs of your MIDI-compatible track(s) with the appropriate settings toroute the MIDI signals into and out of the tracks.MIDI InputThe MIDI Input selector in the Edit or Mix window for a MIDI-compatibletrack is the functional equivalent to the Audio Input Path selector for anAudio track. This selector determines which incoming MIDI data getsrecorded onto the track in Pro Tools.On MIDI tracks, the MIDI Input selector is located in the I/O view (Editwindow) or in the I/O section of the channel strip (Mix window), where theAudio Input Path selector would be on an Audio track. On Instrument tracks,however, the MIDI Input selector appears in the Instrument view. Thissection of the track display or channel strip is used only for Instrument tracksand needs to be displayed separately.
To display the Instrument view, do one of the following:▪ Choose VIEW > MIX WINDOW > INSTRUMENTS. The Instrument MIDIcontrols will appear at the top of the channel strip.▪ Choose VIEW > EDIT WINDOW > INSTRUMENTS. The Instrument MIDIcontrols will appear at the head of the track display.The MIDI Input selectors for MIDI-compatible tracks are set to All bydefault, such that the MIDI signals from all connected and enabled inputdevices are received in the track. If you prefer, you can use the MIDI Inputselector to set the MIDI Input to a specific device (port) and channel.
