Bachelor of Arts
The Bachelor of Arts with a major in music is designed for students who wish to study
music in a broad liberal arts context. The major is balanced among four types of music
study: theory, literature and history, applied study in performance, and ensemble
participation. In the senior year, students present a solo recital or the results of an
independent research topic (a correlative paper is required). The B.A. degree with a
major in music is ideal for a student who wishes to deepen one’s interest and ability in
music, whether or not one seeks to pursue music as a career or avocation while still
preparing the student for further study in any professional field.
The Bachelor of Arts with a major in music has two optional courses of study: a track
leading to Disciplinary Merit in Music upon graduation, and an emphasis in songwriting,
which consists of upper-level courses in music, including composition and arranging,
resulting in a portfolio of original songs to be presented as the capstone project in a
performance during the student’s senior year. Further information on these options may
