ED 312 EL Teaching Mathematics in Primary Grades (1)<br />
A methods course focusing on emergent mathematical concepts for young children.<br />
Extensive field experience required. An Experiential Learning and service-learning<br />
integrated course. Prerequisite: admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />
ED 313 EL IA Language and Literacy I (1)<br />
Provides a framework to make appropriate decisions regarding the planning,<br />
implementation, and assessment of language arts instruction using appropriate literature<br />
for children and young people as models for reading and writing. The course allows the<br />
teacher candidate to explore books for children, authors, illustrators, and poets as<br />
resources for planning and teaching language arts in elementary classrooms in all<br />
disciplines. Includes a laboratory experience in K-6 schools and working with children<br />
with special needs. An Experiential Learning and Interpretation or Analysis designated<br />
course. Background clearance required. A service-learning integrated course.<br />
Prerequisite: admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />
ED 315 EL Language and Literacy II (1)<br />
Provides a framework to make appropriate decisions regarding the planning,<br />
implementation, and the assessment of instruction in the teaching of reading and the<br />
language arts for all learners in K-6 classrooms. Teacher candidates will carefully<br />
examine components of a balanced literacy program based on best practices rooted in<br />
research and current thinking about how children become literate. Instruction will be<br />
based on Standards for Reading Professionals developed by the International Reading<br />
Association and the National Council of Teachers of English Standards for the English<br />
language arts. The course includes working with special needs learners. Laboratory<br />
experiences in area K-6 schools include tutoring, small group instruction, and whole<br />
group instruction. Laboratory required. An Experiential Learning designated and servicelearning<br />
integrated course. Prerequisites: admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />
ED 316 EL Language and Literacy III (1)<br />
Expands upon theory, principles, and practices developed in ED 313 and ED 315. A<br />
focus on content area reading, study skills, and the use of technology in the teaching of<br />
reading and the language arts is developed. Extensive laboratory experiences in area K-6<br />
schools include tutoring, small group instruction, and whole group instruction. This<br />
course includes working with special needs learners. Laboratory required. An<br />
Experiential Learning designated and service-learning integrated course. Prerequisites:<br />
admission to Teacher Education Program and ED 315.<br />
ED 317 EL WR Teaching Social Studies (1)<br />
Provides teacher candidates with philosophy, content knowledge, techniques, and<br />
materials to assist them in the teaching of social studies in grades K-6. Responsible<br />
citizenship and the importance of multi-cultural education is stressed. Attention will be<br />
given to teaching children with special needs. Laboratory required. An Experiential<br />
Learning and Writing Reinforcement designated course. A service-learning integrated<br />
course. Prerequisite: admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />
