GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS<br />

Degrees Conferred<br />

Birmingham-Southern College confers the earned undergraduate degrees of Bachelor of<br />

Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Musical Arts, Bachelor of Music Education, and<br />

Bachelor of Science. The College also confers the earned graduate degree of Master of<br />

Science in Data Science. Details about the masters program may be found in the graduate<br />

catalog.<br />

Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree<br />

To earn a bachelor’s degree offered by the College, a student must complete the<br />

following requirements:<br />

(1) Total units: successfully complete a minimum of 32 units (30 regular term units and 2<br />

Exploration term units). No more than two Exploration term units may count toward<br />

graduation. Additional Exploration term units count toward the cumulative grade point<br />

average and will also appear on the student’s transcript. Additional Exploration term<br />

units cannot substitute for regular term units.<br />

(2) General education: successfully complete the Explorations curriculum requirements<br />

listed in the following section of this catalog.<br />

(3) Major: successfully complete a concentration consisting of a minimum of eight units.<br />

For the Bachelor of Arts degree or the Bachelor of Science degree, no more than 20 units<br />

in a disciplinary or interdisciplinary major and its supporting courses (including<br />

Exploration terms) may be presented toward the 32 units required for graduation.<br />

(4) Academic areas: successfully complete at least one regular term unit in each of four<br />

academic areas: fine and performing arts (art, art history, music, theatre); social sciences<br />

(economics, political science, psychology, sociology); natural sciences (astronomy,<br />

biology, chemistry, physics, UES 150, UES 160); and humanities (Arabic, Asian studies,<br />

Chinese, English, Greek and Roman studies, Hebrew, history, Latin, philosophy, religion,<br />

Spanish, and excluding EH 102, EH 208, and language courses at or below the<br />

intermediate level). These academic area courses may be used to fulfill general education<br />

and major requirements.<br />

(5) Grade point average: earn a minimum grade point average of 2.000 (a “C” average)<br />

on all work completed at Birmingham-Southern College and a minimum grade point<br />

average of 2.000 on all work completed for a major or minor. Students who pursue an<br />

interdisciplinary major must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.000 in the<br />

required courses in each of the disciplines.<br />
