MU 373 Diction for Singers (½)<br />
A study of Italian, German, and French pronunciation as it applies to solo vocal<br />
repertoire. Special emphasis is placed on use of the International Phonetic Alphabet<br />
(IPA), analysis of texts, and performance of selected works.<br />
MU 421 Piano Literature (½)<br />
Music for the piano with emphasis on the standard repertory. Prerequisite: MU 151.<br />
MU 422 Orchestral Literature (½)<br />
A survey of compositions for orchestra (symphonies, overtures, tone poems, and<br />
concerti) from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Prerequisite: MU 222.<br />
MU 425 Vocal Literature (½)<br />
A study of a selected repertoire for the solo voice. Prerequisite: MU 222.<br />
MU 427 Choral Literature (½)<br />
Principle genres of literature for choral ensembles from the sixteenth century to the<br />
present, with emphasis on the standard repertory. Seminar format requires students to<br />
research and present on assigned topics throughout the term.<br />
MU 437 Vocal Pedagogy (½)<br />
An introduction to various methods of teaching singing. Emphasis is placed on the<br />
science of how the vocal mechanism is trained for multiple genres of singing. The course<br />
includes the study of vocal anatomy, physiology, acoustics, vocal health, vocal<br />
dysphonia, development and the process of teaching. Prerequisite: two terms of MS 120,<br />
MS 320, or MS 420; or instructor consent.<br />
MU 450 Orchestration, Arranging, and Technology (½)<br />
A course in which students will learn orchestration and arranging methods and how to<br />
apply them using notation, recording, and video editing software. Prerequisite: MU 252.<br />
MU 499 Senior Project in Music (1)<br />
An extensive paper, composition, or performance preparation. Prerequisite: senior<br />
standing. Exploration term.<br />
PH - Physics<br />
PH 101 SM Survey of the Physical Sciences (1)<br />
A survey of the fields of physics, chemistry, earth sciences, and astronomy with emphasis<br />
on environmental and other practical applications. Three lectures and one laboratory<br />
period per week. This course may not be substituted for PH 121 in the physics major<br />
program. A Scientific Methodologies designated course.<br />
