MU 221 GP History of Western Music I (1)<br />
The history of Western music from ancient Greece and Rome through approximately<br />
1750, including significant examples of music literature and music’s role and<br />
development in Western civilization. A Global Perspectives designated course.<br />
Prerequisites: EH 102 and MU 152. Fall.<br />
MU 222 WR History of Western Music II (1)<br />
A study of the history of Western music beginning in 1750 and extending through major<br />
composers of the twentieth century. A Writing Reinforcement designated course.<br />
Prerequisites: EH 102 and MU 152. Spring.<br />
MU 242 CE Opera Workshop (¼)<br />
The study and performance of operas and excerpts from operatic literature. May be<br />
repeated for credit. A Creative Expression designated course.<br />
MU 251 Theory III (¾)<br />
A study of advanced chromatic harmony and the form and analysis of eighteenth- and<br />
nineteenth-century music. Topics will include mode mixture, Neapolitans, augmentedsixths,<br />
substitute chords, passing harmonies, enharmonicism, extended chromaticism, and<br />
musical forms. Prerequisites: MU 152 and MU 155. Corequisite: MU 156. Fall.<br />
MU 252 IA Theory IV (1)<br />
An exploration of post-tonal music and analytical techniques in the twentieth and twentyfirst<br />
centuries, including set-theory, twelve-tone techniques, modes, symmetrical scales,<br />
Impressionism, pandiatonicism, atonality, serialism, aleatory, minimalism, and neoromanticism.<br />
An Interpretation or Analysis designated course. Prerequisite: MU 251.<br />

Directed study for advanced students in the major. Specific guidelines concerning<br />
