specialization: vocal-choral, which is best for students seeking primarily to work with
singers and choirs, or instrumental, the track for students who intend to work with school
orchestral and band ensembles.
Students interested in music education should decide on this degree program no later than
the end of their first year, as the scope of the degree requirements is large, and should
plan to begin the normal series of core courses in music and education in the first year if
possible. Though the degree requirements are numerous, the plan is designed so that a
student can fulfill all of them in eight regular terms and four Exploration terms. An
interview with the Music Faculty and admission to the Teacher Education program are
required, customarily in the second year.
Upon completion of the Bachelor of Musical Education degree, the student will
• be a competent conductor in terms of creativity and expression, score reading,
integrating analysis, style, performance practices, gestural technique, and
effective utilization of instrumental/vocal resources at one’s disposal
• be able to arrange and adapt music to meet the needs and ability levels of
individual students, performing ensembles, and in classroom environments
• have functional performance skills in keyboard, singing, and in other
instruments appropriate to the teaching specialization
• be able to apply analytical and historical knowledge to curriculum development,
lesson planning, and daily rehearsal or classroom and performance activities,
and to effectively relate such knowledge in both a general way and in relation to
their area(s) of specialization
• be able to satisfy all the general competencies of any music major, as outlined
elsewhere in this Catalog
