MU 151 Theory I (¾)<br />
Harmonic and contrapuntal structures in diatonic tonal music, analysis of these structures,<br />
and musical composition in four-voice chorale style. Topics include harmonic<br />
progression, triads and their inversions, cadences, and two-voice first-, second-, and<br />
fourth-species counterpoint. Corequisite: MU 153. Fall.<br />
MU 152 Theory II (¾)<br />
Continuation of harmonic and contrapuntal principles in basic chromatic music, musical<br />
analysis of these structures, and musical composition in a variety of simple textures.<br />
Topics include seventh chords, secondary functions, common-chord modulation,<br />
embellishment, reduction, two-voice imitative counterpoint, and two-voice third- and<br />
fifth-species counterpoint. Prerequisites: MU 151 and MU 153. Corequisite: MU 155.<br />

MU 153 Ear Training I (¼)<br />
A course focusing on elementary aural, keyboard-harmony, and rhythmic skills. Meets<br />
for two 80-minute sessions a week. Corequisite: MU 151.<br />
MU 154 CE Introduction to Electronic Music (1)<br />
A survey of electronic music in the academy and beyond. Topics include the history,<br />
aesthetics, basic techniques, and composition of electronic music. Intended for nonmajors.<br />
A Creative Expression designated course.<br />
MU 155 Ear Training II (¼)<br />
A course focusing on intermediate aural, keyboard-harmony, and rhythmic skills. Meets<br />
for two 80-minute sessions a week. Prerequisites: MU 151 and MU 153. Corequisite: MU<br />

A course focusing on advanced aural, keyboard-harmony, and rhythmic skills. Meets for<br />

MU 177, 277, 377, 477 Special Topics in Music (1)<br />
An exploration of a selected topic or problem in music.<br />
MU 211 Concert Choir (¼)<br />
An auditioned mixed ensemble that performs major choral works and tours annually.<br />

MU 215 Symphonic Band (¼)<br />
Large instrumental ensemble for the performance of music for wind, brass and percussion<br />
