governmental and non-governmental organizations involved in risk reduction are utilized.<br />

The course may include fieldwork and/or travel. A Global Perspectives designated<br />

course. (Also listed as GCS 370 and PS 370.) Prerequisite: at least sophomore standing.<br />

UES 380 Urban Planning, Development, and Design (1)<br />

Exploration of the historical development of cities as well as what makes them livable<br />

today; plans and strategies to redevelop cities in the era of globalization; and<br />

contemporary urban issues including housing, race, gender, immigration,<br />

underdevelopment, and suburbanization. Students will be involved in engaged learning<br />

though meetings with local planners, developers, and urban designers and<br />

preservationists. A Leadership Studies designated course. Prerequisite: at least<br />

sophomore standing. Fall.<br />

UES 397 EL Internship in Urban Environmental Studies (1)<br />

Internship with approved community partner. Students are required to work a minimum<br />

of 150 hours per term as well as complete course assignments. “S”/“U” only. An<br />

Experiential Learning designated course. Prerequisite: UES 310. Fall, Spring, Summer.<br />

UES 470 Senior Seminar (1)<br />

An interdisciplinary capstone experience for the integration and synthesis of disciplines<br />

and subject areas related to the major, with an emphasis on creative problem solving. The<br />

course involves readings, guest speakers, instructor- and student-led discussions, and a<br />

significant project (with visual, written, and oral components) that focuses on advancing<br />

urban sustainability and community development. (Also listed as ARCH 470.)<br />

Prerequisite: senior standing. Spring.<br />
