The idea of purposeful and intentional teaching focused through a liberal arts lens
captures the vision of teacher education shared by the education department. We believe
that purposeful and intentional teachers demonstrate intellectual curiosity and
philosophical, pedagogical, and academic grounding. We seek to develop teachers who
practice reflective and intentional teaching and advocacy for the community, profession,
and all children. Our unique programs stress local and civic engagement starting in the
first year.
Birmingham-Southern College’s education department acknowledges that our nation and
communities face critical challenges and need caring, innovative, and skilled educators to
be a part of the solution. The education major requires students to take a core set of
courses designed to provide a foundation in the historical, theoretical, and critical study
of education. After completing core courses, students choose one of three tracks:
Elementary/Collaborative K-6 Education, Secondary 6-12 Education, or Professional
Studies in Education.
The elementary/collaborative education degree program (Track I) offers students dual
certification endorsement in both elementary and special education.
The secondary education track (Track II) results in secondary candidates receiving a
degree in their subject area and take a series of education courses to complete the
College’s state-approved Teacher Education Program (TEP) with certification.
The professional studies in education track (Track III) is a non-certification track
designed for students seeking careers in which they work with children/youth and/or
families in environments other than a traditional classroom setting.
Upon completion of the teacher education program, students will be able to
• articulate a personal philosophy of education that reflects a synthesis of current
educational theories
• communicate effectively in writing and in oral communication showing a grasp
of discipline-specific language
• plan instruction that activates students’ prior knowledge, builds upon that
knowledge, and assesses student learning
• demonstrate the ability to impact student learning in educational settings
Students who fulfill requirements for the elementary/collaborative education major are
eligible for Alabama State Department of Education dual certification in Elementary
Education and Collaborative Teacher K-6 (Special Education). Students may seek
