BI 204 QA Biological Data Analysis (1)<br />
A course that provides experience with retrieval, computer analysis, interpretation, and<br />
presentation of biological data from a variety of study designs. A Quantitative Analysis<br />
designated course.<br />
BI 206 Field Botany (1)<br />
A study of the plants and fungi native to the southeastern United States, particularly<br />
Alabama, with special emphasis on identification, classification, distribution, and<br />
ecology. Two lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week. One weekend field trip is<br />
required. Prerequisite: BI 115. Spring of even-numbered years.<br />
BI 215 Principles of Genetics (1)<br />
A thorough introduction to the structure, function, and transmission of genetic material.<br />
Topics from classical and molecular genetics are covered. Three one-hour lectures per<br />
week. Prerequisite: BI 125. Fall, Spring.<br />
BI 225 WR Evolutionary Ecology (1)<br />
A study of the basic concepts of evolution and ecology as a gateway to upper-level<br />
coursework in ecology and organismal biology. Emphasis is placed on an understanding<br />
of natural selection and how it shapes speciation, population dynamics, and community<br />
interactions and composition. A Writing Reinforcement designated course. Prerequisites:<br />
BI 215 or UES 150, and at least sophomore standing. Fall, Spring.<br />
BI 232 Invertebrate Zoology (1)<br />
An introduction to the invertebrate animals with an emphasis on their diversity,<br />
morphology, physiology, and ecology. One weekend field trip is required. Three lectures<br />
and one three-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisite: BI 115. Fall of even-numbered<br />
years.<br />
BI 293, 393, 493 EL Independent Study in Biology (½ or 1)<br />
An independent study of the practices and techniques of biological research. Students<br />
will focus on the design, conduction, and presentation of experiments, data analysis, and<br />
information retrieval. An Experiential Learning designated course. Instructor consent<br />
required.<br />
BI 297, 397, 497 Internship in Biology (½ or 1)<br />
An internship opportunity allowing students to practice career skills and/or further<br />
develop abilities beneficial for graduate study. Specific guidelines concerning internships<br />
appear in the “Exploration Term and Contract Learning” section of this catalog.<br />
BI 298, 398, 498 Teaching Experience in Biology (½)<br />
A course-based teaching experience in which the student engages in activities which may<br />
include setting up, preparing for, and attending or teaching scheduled laboratories;<br />
