HON 142 Living a Life of Significance (1)<br />
An examination of what it means to live a life of significance. Students will conduct<br />
research throughout the course through readings, interviews, podcasts, and/or other<br />
online resources. Students’ findings will be presented in a variety of formats, including<br />
written reports, in-person and video presentations, scripted performances, and creative<br />
formats. (Also listed as IDS 142.) Prerequisite: Harrison Honors Program. Fall.<br />
HON 143 ES The Quest for Justice (1)<br />
A continuation of the first-year experience for Honors students. This course explores the<br />
relationship between the individual and society by studying political and moral<br />
philosophy, literature, plays, course cases, and history. Questions about law, political<br />
obligation, freedom, equality, justice, and human nature are examined. The course looks<br />
at different kinds of societies, such as the ancient city, modern democracy, and<br />
totalitarianism, and confronts both perennial and contemporary issues. Readings present<br />
diverse viewpoints, and seminars are conducted by discussion. An Explorations in<br />
Scholarship designated course. Prerequisite: Harrison Honors Program. Spring.<br />
HON 204 ES Human Destiny (1)<br />
An investigation into differing philosophical accounts of human existence and the ideas<br />
of fate and destiny. The aim of the course is to discover ways we might respond to<br />
enduring philosophic questions concerning human destiny within a multicultural context.<br />
Topics include the meaning of life, the relationships between soul and body, death and<br />
value, anthropocentrism and teleology, gnosis and salvation, ming and karma, science<br />
and religion, freedom and prediction. Emphasis is placed on integrating interdisciplinary<br />
materials to appreciate diversity in human values. May count as PL 207 toward<br />
fulfillment of Asian studies course requirements. An Explorations in Scholarship<br />
designated course. Prerequisite: Harrison Honors Program.<br />
HON 223 QA Uncommon Sense (1)<br />
How perspectives and tools from physical science can be used by average citizens to<br />
assess subjects of relevance in ordinary life. Given the constant deluge of information in<br />
modern life, it is critical to be able to assess claims without depending on authority, even<br />
when available information is inadequate. Students will learn a relatively small set of<br />
quantitative analytic skills and apply them to evaluate contemporary questions of interest.<br />
A Quantitative Analysis designated course. Prerequisite: Harrison Honors Program.<br />
HON 224 CE Crucible Steel: Creative Expression and Human Rights (1)<br />
A course in artistic responses to human rights events. The focus may be one of any topic<br />
of inquiry into issues of human rights and related creative responses, such as<br />
“Birmingham 1963 and Now” and creative writing. Harrison Scholars may enroll in the<br />
course a second time if the subject matter and creative discipline are different. A Creative<br />
