Designated courses address poverty and inequality in some way. With permission of the<br />

program coordinator, students may complete an independent study contract to fulfill<br />

program requirements. Other courses may also qualify; students who see a connection to<br />

poverty in a particular course and wish to use the course to fulfill program requirements<br />

should contact the professor and the program coordinator at the beginning of the term to<br />

discuss.<br />

The purpose of a major in psychology is to provide a background of knowledge for<br />

students going on to graduate work in psychology, as well as for those students going<br />

into a variety of professions that require an understanding of the principles of human<br />

behavior.<br />

Upon completion of the psychology major, students will be able to<br />

• articulate major concepts, theoretical perspectives, and empirical findings of<br />

psychology<br />

• understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research<br />

designs, data analysis, and interpretation<br />

• respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when<br />

possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and<br />

mental processes<br />

• demonstrate information competence and the ability to use computers and other<br />

technology for many purposes<br />

• communicate effectively in a variety of formats<br />
