(3) fulfillment of the EL learning outcomes:<br />

• connect relevant experiences with academic content knowledge<br />

• explore the relationship between relevant experiences and self-knowledge<br />

(values, professional aspirations, abilities)<br />

• analyze the relationship between relevant experiences and public values and<br />

interests<br />

(4) critical reflection before, during, and after the experience that reveals the students’<br />

evolving comprehension of relevant academic content, themselves, and their relationship<br />

to a larger community<br />

(5) support from a committee-approved faculty or staff member who serves as a guide for<br />

student learning and reflection<br />

EL experiences can be either unit- or non-unit-bearing activities and, when unit-bearing,<br />

may be used to fulfill other requirements in the Explorations curriculum or in the major,<br />

minor, or distinction when appropriate.<br />

Students may participate in regularly offered EL opportunities or may initiate their own<br />

projects. All EL projects must be approved in advance by the appropriate faculty<br />

committee. Project titles appear on the academic transcript.<br />

academic advisors and from the Krulak Institute.<br />

Exploration Term<br />

The January Exploration Term provides opportunities for academic exploration not<br />

possible during the regular term, including opportunities for study-travel or focused<br />

creative production. First-year students take part in on-campus projects. Sophomores,<br />

juniors, and seniors may develop their own contracted projects. See the “Exploration<br />

Term” section in this catalog for more information.<br />

Contract Learning<br />

Students may design learning experiences that reflect their individual academic and<br />

career interests through the contract learning process. Contracted experiences may be<br />

initiated during any academic term and include independent study courses, teaching<br />

fellowships, and individualized majors/minors. All contracted learning experiences<br />

require a faculty sponsor and approval of the Contract Learning faculty committee. See<br />

the “Individualized Majors” section of this catalog for more information.<br />

Students initiate individualized learning experiences with a faculty member who plays an<br />

active role in the process. All contracts detail the course, project, or major's objectives;<br />

timetable for work to be completed; a bibliography or required resources; and how the<br />
