AR 356 Observational Drawing (1)<br />

An investigation of light, surface, and form in natural objects and depth and perspective<br />

in architecture. Students will also draw inspiration from works in the Birmingham<br />

Museum of Art and from other local destinations that may include the zoo, botanical<br />

gardens, and downtown. Figure laboratory required. Prerequisite: AR 250.<br />

AR 372 WR Research Methodologies in Visual Art (1)<br />

Develops conceptual and critical analysis skills crucial to the maturation of the visual<br />

artist; culminates in the production of both a visual portfolio and written portfolio<br />

demonstrating conceptual sophistication. Required of all studio art and architectural<br />

studies majors in the spring of their third year of study. A Writing Reinforcement<br />

designated course. (Also listed as ARCH 372.) Prerequisites: junior standing; three 300-<br />

level courses in studio art, one of which may be taken concurrently, or THA 212 (for<br />

architectural studies majors); or consent of the art faculty. Spring.<br />

AR 435 Advanced Printmaking (1)<br />

A studio experience that concentrates and expands on established print processes.<br />

Processes learned in 300-level printmaking courses will provide the foundation for<br />

developing a greater understanding of the relationship between techniques and concepts.<br />

The course will develop students’ awareness of their creative potential and will explore<br />

the relationship between technical and aesthetic consideration in classic and<br />

contemporary printmaking. Prerequisites: two units from AR 330, AR 331, AR 332, AR<br />

333, and AR 334. Fall, Spring.<br />

AR 471 Senior Studio I (1)<br />

A course for B.A. and B.F.A. studio art degree candidates that leads to the production of<br />

a series of related works in the student’s area of specialization. For the B.A. student, the<br />

course fulfills the senior capstone experience and will culminate in a public talk and a<br />

written formal statement. A public exhibition of completed work is optional. For the<br />

B.F.A. student, the course is the first of three courses (AR 471, AR 472, and AR 499)<br />

that comprise the senior capstone experience; the completion of all three courses will<br />

culminate in a public exhibition, a public talk, a formal artist’s statement, and a written<br />

thesis. The major components of this course include weekly critiques, a written statement<br />

of purpose, and the development of a formal statement that outlines the conceptual and<br />

visual basis of the student’s work. Prerequisites: completion of three AR courses at the<br />

300 or 400 level in the studio concentration, senior standing, and instructor consent. Fall.<br />

AR 472 Senior Studio II (1)<br />

Final component of the Senior Capstone experience for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree<br />

in studio art. The course will culminate in the B.F.A. exhibition in <strong>BSC</strong>’s Durbin Gallery,<br />

written thesis, oral presentation, and digital portfolio. This capstone experience is<br />

evaluated by studio art faculty. Prerequisites: AR 471 and AR 499. Spring.<br />
