A continuation of biblical Hebrew instruction provided in Elementary Biblical Hebrew I.<br />
Completes the introduction to biblical Hebrew grammar started in the first course and<br />
also provides further training in translation practices and exegetical method. Prerequisite:<br />
HB 101.<br />

HI 102 GP European Civilization I (1)<br />
The historical development of European social and political attitudes and institutions<br />
through the Age of Enlightenment. A Global Perspectives designated course.<br />
HI 103 CI European Civilization II (1)<br />
The historical development of European social and political attitudes and institutions<br />
from the French Revolution to the late twentieth century. A Community Interests<br />
designated course.<br />
HI 110 ES Great Leaders in Modern Western History (1)<br />
An examination of the leadership of several important figures in western history from the<br />
Reformation to the Second World War. Previous topics have included Martin Luther<br />
(1483-1546), Elizabeth I (1533-1603), Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1<strong>82</strong>1), Giacomo<br />
Puccini (1858-1924), and Winston Churchill (1874-1965). Also, students research and<br />
report on the life of another leader of their choice. Through the study of this diverse<br />
group of leaders, students will gain an awareness of the historical periods in which these<br />
individuals lived and learn about biography as an historical genre. Students will also be<br />
introduced to modern theories of leadership and will be challenged to apply these theories<br />
to the leaders studied. An Explorations in Scholarship designated course.<br />
HI 151 IA History of the American People I (1)<br />
The evolution of the American people to 1865, as reflected in their political and<br />
economic development, social practices, and philosophy with particular reference to the<br />
interaction between ideas and social structure. An Interpretation or Analysis designated<br />
course.<br />
HI 152 IA History of the American People II (1)<br />
A thematic survey of the United States from the end of the Civil War to the present.<br />
Students will examine the transformation of the United States from a mostly rural,<br />
agricultural, and traditional society into a powerful and culturally diverse urban,<br />
industrial, and modern nation. Topics include political challenges to the status quo, the<br />
formation of a national economy, labor strife, urbanization, immigration, the rise of the<br />
welfare state, World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War as well as<br />
the civil rights movement and the late twentieth-century conservative political movement.<br />
