Majors should take PY 221 and PY 222 consecutively and are strongly encouraged to<br />

complete them by the end of the sophomore year. All majors will complete a<br />

comprehensive assessment in psychology as part of the senior seminar.<br />

Minor Requirements<br />

Public Health Studies<br />

The Distinction in Public Health Studies (DPHS) program provides an opportunity for<br />

students of all majors to study and apply interdisciplinary perspectives to understanding<br />

health and wellness within and across populations. The program includes an introductory<br />

course in cell and molecular biology, two public health-studies designated electives, and<br />

a capstone course that incorporates an experiential learning project focused on public<br />

health issues. Students must also attain at least a 2.500 grade point average in all<br />

coursework at the College. The successful completion of the Distinction in Public Health<br />

Studies will prepare students for entry-level public health positions in government, nonprofit,<br />

and business settings. Pre-law and pre-health students will also benefit from<br />

earning this distinction, as will students interested in graduate study in public health and<br />

related fields.<br />

Upon completion of the Distinction in Public Health Studies, students will be able to<br />

• apply social, cultural, biological, and environmental perspectives to frame issues<br />

of health and wellness within and across populations<br />

• identify and evaluate the causes and consequences of health disparities within<br />

and between communities<br />

• analyze and assess the evolving contributions of healthcare and public policy to<br />

the health status of communities<br />

• integrate and reflect on a collaborative experience focused on public health issues<br />
