BI 473 EL Directed Research in Field Biology (1)<br />
An advanced exploration of the practices and techniques of research in field biology.<br />
Focuses on the execution and communication of scientific research. May be completed as<br />
the first of two required units of senior capstone research. Six hours of lecture/laboratory<br />
per week. Instructor consent required. An Experiential Learning designated course.<br />
Prerequisites: BI 225 and at least junior standing.<br />
BI 474 EL Directed Research in Cell and Molecular Biology (1)<br />
An advanced exploration of the practices and techniques of research in cell and molecular<br />
biology. Focuses on the execution and communication of scientific research. May be<br />
completed as the first of two required units of senior capstone research. Six hours of<br />
lecture/laboratory per week. Instructor consent required. An Experiential Learning<br />
designated course. Prerequisites: BI 225 and at least junior standing.<br />
BI 475, 499 Capstone Seminar in Biology (1)<br />
A weekly seminar on current research topics and literature in biology. Students develop<br />
and present a seminar focused on the capstone project. Constitutes the second of two<br />
required units of senior capstone research. Instructor consent required. Prerequisite:<br />
completion of or concurrent enrollment in a research-intensive course or experiential<br />
learning independent research experience. BI 475: Fall, Spring; BI 499: Exploration term.<br />
BST - Black Studies<br />
BST 201 Introduction to Black Studies (1)<br />
An examination of the history of Black studies as a movement and an exploration of the<br />
complexities of the field through a transdisciplinary perspective. The course focuses on<br />
the genealogy of Black studies; the historical construction of Africa; the evolution of<br />
blackness as a category and how that has materialized socially and politically across<br />
regions of the globe; the ways in which African diasporic people remember and<br />
encounter Africa; and how African diasporic people have responded to histories of<br />
enslavement, colonization, apartheid, and racism. (Also listed as PS 201.)<br />
BST 470 Black Studies Capstone (½)<br />
A capstone experience for the Distinction in Black Studies. Students reflect on the field<br />
of Black studies and how the distinction has contributed to their development,<br />
intellectually and otherwise. Students are required to produce and publicly present a final<br />
project which could take several forms: a research paper, a performance piece, an art<br />
exhibit, or internship relevant to the field and approved by the instructor. Prerequisites:<br />
BST 201, completion of or current enrollment in three Distinction in Black Studies<br />
electives, and at least junior standing.<br />
