GRS 268 GP Environmental Thought in Antiquity (1)
An introduction to ancient ideas about nature, animals, climate, and the role humans
should play in such systems. The course will explore how cultures from ancient Greece to
early modern Europe conceptualize the relationship between mankind and the natural
world and how changes in the environment affected human development and political
systems. A Global Perspectives designated course. (Also listed as EH 268.)
GRS 293, 393, 493 Independent Study in Greek and Roman Studies (½ or 1)

GRS 295 IA Greek Drama and Democracy (1)
A seminar that examines how ancient Greek drama developed in conversation with the
development of Athenian democracy. Students will read a selection of tragedies and
comedies composed in Athens in the fifth century BCE alongside poetic, philosophical,
and historical works written by contemporary ancient Greek thinkers in order to consider
how the plays reflect, explore, criticize, and ennoble the social, political, and religious
ideologies of democratic Athens. An Interpretation or Analysis designated course. (Also

An exploration of a selected topic or problem in gender and women studies.
GWS 200 Introduction to Gender and Women Studies (1)
An introduction to the concepts and issues concerning the field of gender and women
studies. Placed within a historical and contemporary context, students examine topics
ranging from feminist philosophy, gender roles and stereotypes, gender development,
sexuality and relationships, sexual identity, workplace issues, legal challenges, women in
media, violence against women, and global feminism.
