Every time I get to travel to Israel with my
pastors, one of my favorite places to visit is the
Mount of Beatitudes. A number of years ago, we
climbed up to where Jesus could have sat while He
preached to the multitudes below. Then, as my
pastors were talking, I left them there and walked
along a path, just to spend some time with the Lord.
That was when I realized the path led all the way to
Capernaum.
For the longest time, I had imagined Jesus going
down the mountain toward the multitude. But that
day, I realized the gospel of Matthew records that
when Jesus came down from the mountain, “great
multitudes followed Him.” If He had headed down
toward the multitudes, it wouldn’t have made sense
to say they “followed” Him. Very likely, He had to
be walking down another side of the mountain
toward Capernaum for the multitudes to follow Him.
Just one verse after Jesus healed the man with
leprosy, the Bible tells us He entered Capernaum
(Matt. 8:5), so I believe that’s where Jesus was
headed after He finished His sermon.
