Every time I get <strong>to</strong> travel <strong>to</strong> Israel with my<br />

pas<strong>to</strong>rs, one of my favorite places <strong>to</strong> visit is the<br />

Mount of B<strong>eat</strong>itudes. A number of years ago, we<br />

climbed up <strong>to</strong> where Jesus could have sat while He<br />

preached <strong>to</strong> the multitudes below. Then, as my<br />

pas<strong>to</strong>rs were talking, I left them there <strong>and</strong> walked<br />

along a path, just <strong>to</strong> spend some time with the Lord.<br />

That was when I realized the path led all the <strong>way</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />

Capernaum.<br />

For the longest time, I had imagined Jesus going<br />

down the mountain <strong>to</strong>ward the multitude. But that<br />

day, I realized the gospel of Matthew records that<br />

when Jesus came down from the mountain, “gr<strong>eat</strong><br />

multitudes followed Him.” If He had headed down<br />

<strong>to</strong>ward the multitudes, it wouldn’t have made sense<br />

<strong>to</strong> say they “followed” Him. Very likely, He had <strong>to</strong><br />

be walking down another side of the mountain<br />

<strong>to</strong>ward Capernaum for the multitudes <strong>to</strong> follow Him.<br />

Just one verse after Jesus healed the man with<br />

leprosy, the Bible tells us He entered Capernaum<br />

(Matt. 8:5), so I believe that’s where Jesus was<br />

headed after He finished His sermon.<br />

Any<strong>way</strong>, I continued <strong>to</strong> walk along that path<br />

until I came <strong>to</strong> a huge pile of rocks on the side <strong>and</strong><br />

noticed other slabs of s<strong>to</strong>ne strewn near<strong>by</strong>. All of a
