approving what He has already approved.”<br />

Can you see? To examine <strong>your</strong>self does not mean<br />

<strong>to</strong> check <strong>your</strong>self for sins committed. Notice that<br />

verse 28 says, “Let a man examine himself, <strong>and</strong> so<br />

let him <strong>eat</strong> of the bread <strong>and</strong> drink of the cup.” It does<br />

not say, “Let a man examine himself for sin <strong>and</strong><br />

abstain from the bread <strong>and</strong> the cup.” In fact, <strong>to</strong><br />

partake with sin-consciousness after all the Lord has<br />

done <strong>to</strong> secure our forgiveness <strong>and</strong> healing is <strong>to</strong><br />

partake “in an unworthy manner,” <strong>and</strong> according <strong>to</strong><br />

verse 29, such a believer “<strong>eat</strong>s <strong>and</strong> drinks judgment<br />

<strong>to</strong> himself.”<br />

Judgment in the Greek is krima (Strong’s<br />

#2917), which means “condemnation of wrong.” The<br />

reflexive pronoun himself indicates that this believer<br />

(not God) is performing the judgment upon himself.<br />

He is condemning himself when he partakes with<br />

self-condemnation <strong>and</strong> sin-consciousness. To partake<br />

like that is <strong>to</strong> partake unworthily, because the cup is<br />

proof that the blood of Christ has remitted the<br />

believer’s sins, yet he is still seeing them on himself.<br />

Partaking with sin-consciousness is also “not<br />

discerning the Lord’s body” (v. 29). The word<br />

discerning is diakrino (Strong’s #1252), which<br />

Thayer’s Greek Lexicon defines as “<strong>to</strong> separate,
