eyes of both of them were opened, <strong>and</strong> they<br />

knew that they were naked. (Gen. 3:6–7)<br />

They ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good<br />

<strong>and</strong> Evil. And their eyes were opened—<strong>to</strong> their<br />

nakedness.<br />

Through that act of <strong>eat</strong>ing from a tree, sin <strong>and</strong><br />

d<strong>eat</strong>h entered the world (Rom. 5:12). Man was never<br />

meant <strong>to</strong> have disease, sickness, or pain. Man was<br />

never meant <strong>to</strong> grow old <strong>and</strong> die. God hates d<strong>eat</strong>h.<br />

This is why He called d<strong>eat</strong>h an enemy (1 Cor.<br />

15:26). Our Lord Jesus even wept at Lazarus’s d<strong>eat</strong>h<br />

(John 11:35).<br />

But look at how God reversed everything.<br />

Most people assume the two disciples whom Jesus<br />

walked with on the road <strong>to</strong> Emmaus were men, even<br />

though only one man—Cleopas—was named. I have<br />

many reasons <strong>to</strong> believe the other disciple was a<br />

woman, <strong>and</strong> the two were likely husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> wife.<br />

For instance, they said <strong>to</strong> each other, “Did not our<br />
