with their own meanings. In fact, the Greek word for<br />

judge, krino, has seven different meanings, much<br />

like the word love in English, which can include the<br />

meanings of affection, attraction, admiration,<br />

devotion, loyalty (<strong>and</strong> even a zero score in tennis!),<br />

<strong>and</strong> can be applied <strong>to</strong> humans as well as physical<br />

objects. As such, knowing which original Greek<br />

word was used, <strong>and</strong> which meaning of that word was<br />

intended <strong>by</strong> the author, is crucial <strong>to</strong> arriving at an<br />

accurate underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the passage as a whole.<br />

So let me show you the meanings of the key<br />

Greek words used in 1 Corinthians 11:29–32, how<br />

they reveal <strong>to</strong> us that God does not punish, judge, or<br />

chasten His children with sickness <strong>and</strong> d<strong>eat</strong>h, <strong>and</strong><br />

how they actually apply <strong>to</strong> you, the believer.<br />

Let’s start with verse 28: “Let a man examine<br />

himself.” The word examine is the Greek word<br />

dokimazo (Strong’s #1381), which Vine’s Exposi<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

Dictionary of Biblical Words defines as “<strong>to</strong> prove<br />

with a view <strong>to</strong> approving” or “<strong>to</strong> approve, deem<br />

worthy.” To examine <strong>your</strong>self is <strong>to</strong> know God<br />

approves of you partaking <strong>and</strong> receiving what Jesus<br />

suffered <strong>to</strong> give you. When you partake of the<br />

Communion, you are examining <strong>your</strong>self rightly<br />

when you say, “I know the purpose of the Lord’s<br />

Supper. I know His body was broken for my
