REMEMBERING THE FIRST<br />

PASSOVER<br />

When I was in Israel with some of my pas<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

several years ago, I was invited <strong>by</strong> a dear friend <strong>to</strong><br />

join his family as they celebrated the Jewish<br />

Passover. They are Messianic believers completely<br />

transformed <strong>by</strong> the gospel of grace, <strong>and</strong> it was a<br />

gr<strong>eat</strong> privilege for my pas<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> me <strong>to</strong> partake of<br />

the Passover meal with them. The fact that we were<br />

in Israel made it even more special for me, <strong>and</strong> I<br />

treasured the intimate time we had as a family of<br />

believers.<br />

During that Passover meal, what s<strong>to</strong>od out<br />

distinctively <strong>to</strong> me was the question the children at<br />

the table asked the elders: “Why is this night<br />

different from all other nights?” They were<br />

following an oral tradition of the Jewish people,<br />

passed down from generation <strong>to</strong> generation. More<br />

importantly, this question set up the opportunity for<br />

the elders <strong>to</strong> share with the next generation how the
