Precisely. Many people think that repentance is
about beating themselves up and condemning
themselves for their actions. There is a place for an
outward expression of remorse, and Jesus talked
about such repentance when He said, “Woe to you,
Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty
works which were done in you had been done in
Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago
in sackcloth and ashes” (Matt. 11:21).
But the Greek word used for repentance is
metanoia, and it actually means “a change of
mind.” 3 This means repentance can take place
quietly, without any outward display, and I believe
repentance is happening even right now as you read
this book and hear truths about how God loves you
and is for you. In the parable of the lost sheep, the
sheep did not do anything to “repent.” It simply
allowed the shepherd to find it and lay it on his
shoulders. And that’s how our Lord Jesus defines
repentance in the new covenant. Repentance is a
response to His love. It’s you consenting to be saved.
Consenting to be loved. Consenting to be carried on
His strong shoulders and embraced by His arms of
love. That’s repentance.
