would take the serpents away. May I show you how
God responded to the cry of the children of Israel?
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery
serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be
that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at
it, shall live.” (Num. 21:8)
God’s response wasn’t to take away the serpents.
His response was to instruct Moses to make a replica
of the very thing that was killing them—the serpent
—and to set it on a pole for all to look at. The Bible
goes on to tell us what happened next:
So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it
on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had
bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze
serpent, he lived. (Num. 21:9)
The waves of nausea that immobilize you are
real. The cramps that seize your body are real. The
shortness of breath you have been struggling with is
real. The pain that slices through your head with
every move is real, just as the painful bites from the
fiery serpents were real for the children of Israel.
