were opened <strong>and</strong> they knew Him. (Luke<br />

24:30–31)<br />

While the two disciples were walking <strong>to</strong><br />

Emmaus with Jesus, their eyes had been restrained<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Lord prevented them from recognizing Him<br />

(Luke 24:16). But the moment they <strong>to</strong>ok the bread<br />

from Jesus, the Bible tells us that “their eyes were<br />

opened.” But this time, unlike Adam <strong>and</strong> Eve, their<br />

eyes were not opened <strong>to</strong> their nakedness. Their eyes<br />

were opened so that “they knew Him.”<br />

The word knew here is the Greek word<br />

epiginosko, which means “full or intimate<br />

knowledge or revelation.” 1 In other words, when<br />

they <strong>to</strong>ok the bread <strong>and</strong> ate it, their eyes were opened<br />

<strong>to</strong> perceive who it really was in their midst—the<br />

Messiah they had followed, who had brought<br />

healing, res<strong>to</strong>ration, <strong>and</strong> <strong>life</strong> <strong>to</strong> so many, <strong>and</strong> who<br />

had def<strong>eat</strong>ed d<strong>eat</strong>h! Later, the two disciples spoke<br />

about the things that had happened on the road,<br />

particularly “how He was known <strong>to</strong> them in the<br />

breaking of bread” (Luke 24:33–35).<br />
