His censuring and correcting that we may live and be
partakers of His holiness (Heb. 12:9–10). That we
may live would not be possible if His chastening is
sickness or accidents that lead to death. Notice that
the way the Corinthian believers were censured for
their disorderly behavior when they came together to
partake of the Communion was through Paul
bringing a fresh word of the Communion to them.
God chastens us because we are His children and
He loves us (Heb. 12:6). He does not want us to be
“condemned with the world” (v. 32), but to truly
understand the difference the cross of Jesus has
made in our lives, so that there is a “clear
distinction” between His people and the people of
the world, as was the case when He made a
difference between the Israelites and Egyptians (Ex.
8:23; 11:7 NLT).
The holy Communion is therefore His provision
for His children to be distinct from the world and not
be “condemned with the world.” The word
condemned is katakrino (Strong’s #2632), meaning
to “pass sentence upon.” In this context, katakrino
refers to a divine sentence of weakness, sickness,
and death that was passed upon the world when
Adam sinned.
