■ ARGENTINA
Situation of the Insurance Market at June 30 th , 2015
On September 16 th , the Insurance Department of Argentina
Communication No. 4,724 which reports on the situation of the
insurance market at June 30 th , 2015. The document shows
information on total premium income by line of business,
indicators, assets and liabilities structure and results structure of
the insurance market
In short, the 2014/2015 financial year ending on June 30
recorded total premiums of about AR$ 153,300 million,
AR$ 44,300 million more than in the previous financial year
(+40.8%), exceeding inflation rates This significant growth
depicted the sector as one of the most dynamic in the economy,
powered mainly - as in previous years - by Motor and Workers
Compensation lines. Insurers' investments exceeded AR$ 150,000
million. The aggregate bottom result for all companies was
once more positive, totaling approximately AR$ 11,000 million,
although underwriting results showed a loss of AR$ 8,400
million.
AACS: “We Worry about Inflation for it Increases Loss Rates and
Makes Insurance Management Difficult for us”
“The year 2016 will be determined by what may happen with
the GDP. The two main insurance covers in Argentina are Motor
and Work Risks. Our sector will also depend on the evolution of
the automotive industry, production and sale of cars, and the level
of employment and real salary. There is a growth potential if one
considers that about 20% of cars are still uninsured”, pointed out
Francisco Astelarra, President of the Argentine Association of
Insurance Companies (Asociación Argentina de Compañías de
Seguros, AACS).
In an interview with newspaper Cronista, Astelarra took stock
of the first half of the year: “According to SSN, balance sheets
ended in March reflect a growth in Property insurance above price
levels while it is still characterized by underwriting losses and
financial gains. However, the financial results have been
decreasing vis-à-vis the underwriting results: we have
increasingly lower financial gains to compensate for the
underwriting losses. In an exercise of estimation of inflationadjusted
balance sheets at March 2015, Property insurance
companies would have had negative results. Even though in
nominal terms results are positive, in real terms results are
negative”.
With respect to inflation, he assets that “it is a complex issue.
Inflation worries us because it increases loss rates and makes the
whole insurance management more difficult because we have to
keep the amounts insured updated and this implies a constant
revision.
Does inflation trigger underinsurance? In Astelarra’s opinion,
the lack of spare parts was one of the issues in last year’s agenda.
Is it still so? “This year we have the same problem. There has been
an increase in tyre theft, which causes all the problems that come
with restocking of spare parts. There are still problems with the
supply of spare parts. Motor-related losses due to spare parts and
labor in connection with vehicle damage have become more
expensive. To sum up, the activity grew at March. Final nominal
results were positive, but if balance sheets had been inflationadjusted,
we would have had negative results in real terms”. >128
