El Mercado de Seguros Chileno: Evolución y Perspectivas
The Chilean Insurance Market: Evolution and Prospects
In this article, Jorge Claude, Executive Vice President of
the Association of Chilean Insurers (AACH), describes
the present situation and the outlook for his country’s
insurance industry.
T
he Chilean insurance market is the
fifth largest in Latin America, and is
characterized by its solvency, growth,
dynamics, and sound regulations, and also
by its high level of responsiveness to
emergency situations, such as the 2010
earthquake.
The upward trend of the past few years
continues today and the industry is amidst a
reactivation after undergoing a period of
lower growth in 2014 due to the stagnation
which affected the region’s economies,
including Chile.
In addition, the insurance industry has been adjusting to
regulatory changes, such as Risk-Based Supervision, Market
Behaviour, and others, and at the same time setting its own
self-regulatory directives aimed at ensuring good practices and
sustained solvency.
Market Situation
Chile is considered to be a low-concentration and highlycompetitive
market, with 63 companies-29 writing General
insurance and 34 Life insurance.
At present there are over 57 million insurance policies on the
market, which is equivalent to an average of 3.2 policies per
person; 81% corresponding to Life insurance and 19% to General
insurance.
In 2014 direct premiums amounted to USD10.246 billion, this
represented a real growth of 1.53% over the previous year and 28%
with respect to 2010 (see Graph 1). The higher volume of premiums
occurred within a context in which the national economy grew 1.9%
and the annual inflation stood at 4.4%. Direct premiums have
increased almost on a yearly basis since 2005, with a slight decline
in 2009 as a result of the world economic crisis.
Direct premiums represented 4.2% of the year’s GDP-lower than
Spain (5.3%) and higher than other countries in the region such as
Brazil (4.0%), Argentina (3.6%), Colombia (2.7%), and Mexico
(2.2%). Premiums per capita amounted to USD 575-thereby ranking
in the same position as for the GDP (i.e. lower than Spain and
higher than other countries in the region).
Along the 2005-2014 decade, direct premiums for the industry
as a whole experienced a real increase of 95.5%. The growth
trends of General and Life lines were similar to the market’s:
General insurance grew 101.9% reaching USD 3.468 billion,
and Life insurance 92.4% reaching USD 6.778 billion in 2014 (see
Graph 1).
With respect to indemnities paid, in the last decade there has
