Educational research contribution to the training
of adults with a low schooling level

This article describes the intellectual and professio¬
nal development occurring in education ol adults
with little or no previous schooling. At first, the
author was oriented towards practice and she pro¬
gressively turned to educational research and didac¬
tics of French as a second language. This evolution is
analysed. Besides, reflexive thinking about objects,
methodologies, various approaches and research
contexts provide an opportunity for the author to
question complex relations between educational
sciences and a specific field of education, that is basic
adult training. More generally, it gives the possibility
of questioning conditions and functions of research
devoted to adult education.
Being a girl, a woman, a female teacher : on the way
to equality

Being fully aware of inequalities, especially gender ine¬
qualities at school, encouraged me to think about my
personal life, my career path, to find the various aspects
of this concern. My gender, my education, my schoo¬
ling, my orientation, my enrollment in co-educational
or single sex schools training led to start research on the
problematics ol gendered/social relationships, reading,
visits to several European countries : all these elements
took part in the construction of an ideal of equality bet¬
ween man and woman in the society, between boys and
girls at school. My job as an educational counsellor lets

me hope that school will have an important role to play
in the construction of equality and will prepare men
and women of the future.
From the child of Republic to the hussar of Republic

In neighbourhoods where social and economic situa¬
tions become worse, teaching is more and more diffi¬
cult, and a certain number of teachers get discoura¬
ged. Firstly, the pupils attitude towards teachers (and
other school personnel) can explain this situation.
Nevertheless, teaching them the rules ofconduct with
other people is not an impossible aim, even if it is
often difficult. Each teacher can improve, or change
this situation with perseverance, thoroughness and
respect towards the pupils. Teaching citizenship is,
may be, the beginning of education success through
the mutual respect between teacher and pupil.
A new vision of school failure

For the author, individual and professional paths are
closely linked. As a teacher in a secondary vocational
school (real estate business section), she soon
became aware of the problem of school failure and its
disturbing consequences for youths, which led her on
to practice a kind of institutional pedagogy suppor¬
ted by counselling, official recommandations, pro¬
ject work, cooperative work to help student
adjustement to the Institution and acquisition of
basic knowledges necessary for an actual integration
in society.
