As far as the comparative aspects of the research are
concerned, a vast amount of work has commenced
that deals with historical and contemporary analyses,
in several countries, of the impact of the transfer
of educational models. These analyses should be
developed further and differentiated so as to shed
light on the variable nature and the overall impact
of the transfers of educational models.
In conclusion, one could say that this project illustrated
for each of its partners the wealth of multidisciplinary
and multi-institutional exchanges transcending
the oppositions imagined between the academic
world and that of the international organisations, as
well as between university research and field work. It
also brought to light that the crisis in secondary
education affects both the North and the South
and that in both cases, what appears to be cruelly
missing is a renewed vision of secondary education
which would seek to redefine in depth its goals,
its public(s) and its concrete modes of functioning
in and for the worlds of today and tomorrow.
The notion of “vision” is crucial here. By calling
for a projection into the future, this renewed vision
must go beyond perspectives limited by the
too-near future which exacerbate possible conflicts
at a time when it’s more than ever a question of
bringing together the strengths of the different actors
on whom secondary education depends, and
at a time when the latter is considered everywhere
to be decisive for raising the average level of training
of all populations beyond that of basic primary
education. The acts of the colloquium entitled Secondary
Education Worldwide : Assessments and
Perspectives, to which the members of our project
were closely associated, constitute a useful contribution
in this sense and are a reflection of the GI-
AN’s goals. They also illustrate the fecundity of the
GIAN’s approach through the ample place given
not only to classic academic studies and applied
research but also to the description of very innovative
field experiences, the combination of which is
imminently complimentary and enlightening for
the future.
