or no attempt has been made to discover the potential immune mechanisms underlying such
differences between these two breeds. Therefore, the aims of the experiments reported here
were first to confirm the higher resistance of BBB lambs compared to INRA 401 lambs, as
observed by Aumont et al. (2003). The cytokine polarization of the adaptive immune response
and the kinetics of the cellular effectors have been explored and compared between the two
breeds to define if i) BBB sheep develop a clear Th2 immune response and if ii) differences in
the timing or intensity of this response explain the higher resistance observed in BBB sheep.
