The Pompeii Forum Project<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Preserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Forum<br />

by John Dobbins<br />

The Pompeii Forum Project is not a conserv<strong>at</strong>ion project<br />

per se, but its practices are inherently conserv<strong>at</strong>ion-oriented<br />

in th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y strive to preserve d<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

Non-invasive, or minimally invasive, procedures respect<br />

<strong>the</strong> fragility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsurface remains,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> future archaeologists to excav<strong>at</strong>e here. The<br />

paper discusses close observ<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> CAD model, <strong>the</strong><br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ionships among urban components, magnetometry,<br />

small tests (saggi) to answer specific questions, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> collecting <strong>and</strong> preserving digital d<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

Proposals <strong>and</strong> suggestions<br />

We would like to recommend:<br />

1. Th<strong>at</strong> we <strong>at</strong> this conference propose a one-hundred-year<br />

mor<strong>at</strong>orium on large-scale digs in <strong>the</strong> un-excav<strong>at</strong>ed areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pompeii.<br />

2. Th<strong>at</strong> for <strong>the</strong> next century archaeologists focus on <strong>the</strong><br />

document<strong>at</strong>ion, analysis, excav<strong>at</strong>ion, interpret<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>and</strong><br />

preserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> already-excav<strong>at</strong>ed remains. These<br />

approaches constitute <strong>the</strong> current “best practices.”<br />

3. Th<strong>at</strong> many insulae be reburied with lapilli to protect<br />

<strong>the</strong>m from vegetal growth, wea<strong>the</strong>r, earthquakes <strong>and</strong><br />

volcanic eruptions.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> realm <strong>of</strong> present<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong>re are many possibilities:<br />

(1) didactic inform<strong>at</strong>ion in several languages as one finds, for<br />

example, <strong>at</strong> Fishbourne in Engl<strong>and</strong>; (2) a corps <strong>of</strong> trained <strong>and</strong><br />

knowledgeable docents st<strong>at</strong>ioned in key buildings <strong>and</strong> <strong>at</strong><br />

important loc<strong>at</strong>ions to explain <strong>the</strong> history <strong>and</strong> significance<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remains; (3) inexpensive, accur<strong>at</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> useful written<br />

italiano<br />

m<strong>at</strong>erials th<strong>at</strong> visitors can purchase as <strong>the</strong>y enter <strong>the</strong> site;<br />

(4) an inform<strong>at</strong>ive web site th<strong>at</strong> visitors can consult as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

prepare <strong>the</strong>ir trips. And finally, (5) a radical proposal, namely<br />

th<strong>at</strong> a house, or an entire insula, be devoted to historical recre<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> type th<strong>at</strong> one finds <strong>at</strong> Colonial Williamsburg<br />

in Virginia in <strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es. At <strong>the</strong> colonial-period capitol<br />

<strong>of</strong> Virginia, <strong>the</strong> 18 th century is recre<strong>at</strong>ed through architecture,<br />

daily life activities <strong>and</strong> didactic explan<strong>at</strong>ions by staff<br />

members in costume, <strong>and</strong> craft production using <strong>the</strong> same<br />

tools <strong>and</strong> techniques as those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 18 th century.<br />

The Pompeii Forum Project<br />

Fundamentally, we are not a project th<strong>at</strong> digs. We are a<br />

project th<strong>at</strong> looks, records, analyzes, <strong>and</strong> draws conclusions.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> our research we have discovered th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is a rich harvest <strong>of</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a to be ga<strong>the</strong>red in <strong>the</strong> forum simply<br />

by looking <strong>and</strong>, especially, careful measuring. Our work<br />

is presented under <strong>the</strong> following headings: Looking Closely,<br />

Harvesting D<strong>at</strong>a, Drawing Conclusions; Analysis <strong>of</strong> Rel<strong>at</strong>ionships<br />

among <strong>the</strong> Urban Components; Magnetometry; Small<br />

Saggi to Answer Specific Questions; <strong>and</strong> Preserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

Digital D<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

Conclusion<br />

In sum, our investig<strong>at</strong>ions have been minimally invasive<br />

archaeologically, but <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>of</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a collected has led to<br />

conclusions pertaining to three important periods in <strong>the</strong> life<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forum. The preserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forum buildings th<strong>at</strong><br />

tell such an important story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organic growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city<br />

should be high on our list <strong>of</strong> preserv<strong>at</strong>ion priorities.
