Developing a Design Approach to<br />

Ro<strong>of</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> Stabiae Archaeological Site<br />

by Thomas Noble Howe<br />

The Restoring Ancient Stabiae project (RAS) is an<br />

ambitious undertaking to establish a major archaeological<br />

park on <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> partially excav<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

villas <strong>of</strong> ancient Stabiae. The focus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> park will<br />

be to present <strong>the</strong> sen<strong>at</strong>orial <strong>and</strong> equestrian villa culture <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Bay <strong>of</strong> Naples. The park will function in t<strong>and</strong>em with <strong>the</strong><br />

urban sites <strong>of</strong> Pompeii <strong>and</strong> Herculaneum <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> rustic villa<br />

<strong>of</strong> Boscoreale.<br />

The masterplan (RAS Found<strong>at</strong>ion)<br />

The project was cre<strong>at</strong>ed through an unusual invit<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Superintendant <strong>of</strong> Pompeii to <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />

Maryl<strong>and</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Architecture in 1998, <strong>and</strong> l<strong>at</strong>er extended<br />

to <strong>the</strong> American Academy in Rome. It is now an independent<br />

found<strong>at</strong>ion in Italy whose governing board (consiglio<br />

d’amministrazione) consists <strong>of</strong> represent<strong>at</strong>ives from <strong>the</strong> Soprintendenza,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Comit<strong>at</strong>o di Stabiae Ren<strong>at</strong>ae (representing<br />

local schools <strong>and</strong> business interests) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong><br />

Architecture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Maryl<strong>and</strong>. The Found<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

was cre<strong>at</strong>ed with <strong>the</strong> capability to seek <strong>and</strong> expend both EU<br />

<strong>and</strong> foreign priv<strong>at</strong>e funds (mainly from USA). It is <strong>the</strong> Found<strong>at</strong>ion’s<br />

responsibility to develop a coherent series <strong>of</strong> archaeological<br />

<strong>and</strong> architectural projects <strong>and</strong> present <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Soprintendenza. A Master Plan was presented in 2001,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> first excav<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> constructions were scheduled<br />

to begin soon <strong>the</strong>reafter.<br />

italiano<br />

The Stabiae villas were ro<strong>of</strong>ed soon after <strong>the</strong>ir initial reexcav<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

in <strong>the</strong> 1950s <strong>and</strong> 1960s, which contributed considerably<br />

to <strong>the</strong> preserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site. The 1980 earthquake<br />

destroyed many modern ro<strong>of</strong>s <strong>and</strong> ancient colonnades, <strong>and</strong><br />

provisional ro<strong>of</strong>ing has been put up since. Recent testing <strong>and</strong><br />

an experimental ro<strong>of</strong> has been constructed with <strong>the</strong> support<br />

<strong>of</strong> ENEA (Italian N<strong>at</strong>ional Agency for New Technologies, Energy<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Environment).<br />

The Master Plan stipul<strong>at</strong>ed a design approach<br />

for all new structures on <strong>the</strong> site—a<br />

visitor center, administr<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>of</strong>fices as well<br />

as <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sites proper—th<strong>at</strong><br />

would make all new structures appear<br />

lightweight <strong>and</strong> temporary <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

allow <strong>the</strong> Roman architectural remains to<br />

domin<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site.<br />

The Master Plan stipul<strong>at</strong>es fur<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>ing for <strong>the</strong> villas meet three conditions:<br />

it calls for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a<br />

type <strong>of</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>ing which is more effective in<br />

preserving this type <strong>of</strong> site than anything<br />

th<strong>at</strong> has come before, <strong>and</strong> it must suggest<br />

<strong>the</strong> sp<strong>at</strong>ial <strong>and</strong> light conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original<br />

villas. The ro<strong>of</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stabiae villas<br />

present an additional design challenge as<br />

<strong>the</strong> villas with <strong>the</strong>ir new ro<strong>of</strong>ing may become<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most prominent fe<strong>at</strong>ures<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cityscape <strong>of</strong> Castellammare di Stabia.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> first two conditions,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>ing must be effective as<br />

a major urban monument in <strong>the</strong> cityscape<br />

<strong>of</strong> Castellammare.<br />
