An ArcheoGis Program for Managing<br />

Archaeological Excav<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

by Vincenzo Sommella<br />

The ArcheoGis is a sp<strong>at</strong>ial inform<strong>at</strong>ion system for<br />

managing archaeological excav<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> preserving<br />

remains from <strong>the</strong> classical age in situ. It can be<br />

installed on desktop computers <strong>and</strong> was developed<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei within <strong>the</strong><br />

framework <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kress Project set up by WMF.<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this program is to make it possible to document<br />

<strong>and</strong> manage all phases <strong>of</strong> a conserv<strong>at</strong>ion project in such a<br />

way as to cover <strong>the</strong> entire methodological process <strong>of</strong> restoring<br />

a Roman domus in Pompeii, from surveying <strong>and</strong> document<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

to its structural consolid<strong>at</strong>ion, from <strong>the</strong> mapping<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> damage <strong>and</strong> deterior<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> decor<strong>at</strong>ed surfaces<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir restor<strong>at</strong>ion, from <strong>the</strong> design <strong>of</strong> utilities to <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> site, as well as scientific research <strong>and</strong> dissemin<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

The SIT ArcheoGIS program enables users to manage<br />

<strong>and</strong> carry out alphanumerical <strong>and</strong> sp<strong>at</strong>ial investig<strong>at</strong>ions on a<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ional d<strong>at</strong>abase designed to process <strong>and</strong> store inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

files. These files include MA for buildings <strong>and</strong> rooms,<br />

PRT for walls, USM for str<strong>at</strong>igraphic wall units, INT-RSA for<br />

previous (<strong>and</strong> ancient) construction work <strong>and</strong> restor<strong>at</strong>ions,<br />

APT for openings, RIV for finishes, PAV for floors, CEC <strong>and</strong><br />

CEM for ancient <strong>and</strong> modern ro<strong>of</strong>ing, as well as graphic <strong>and</strong><br />

photographic document<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

The program will, in addition to <strong>the</strong> plans <strong>and</strong> sections <strong>of</strong><br />

italiano<br />

<strong>the</strong> restor<strong>at</strong>ion design projects for individual buildings, including<br />

<strong>the</strong> design <strong>of</strong> new ro<strong>of</strong>ing, help manage <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> circul<strong>at</strong>ion routes <strong>and</strong> walkways, <strong>the</strong> rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

rainw<strong>at</strong>er disposal system from <strong>the</strong> impluvium, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> design<br />

<strong>and</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> technical install<strong>at</strong>ions (smoke, electricity,<br />

infrared, video-cameras, etc).<br />

As a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project, <strong>the</strong> wall paintings in <strong>the</strong> House <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Silver Wedding Anniversary were surveyed. The Archeo-<br />

GIS system manages this inform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> makes it possible<br />

to study <strong>the</strong>se views <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> walls—with <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> personalized<br />

tools—<strong>and</strong> consult <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>abank <strong>of</strong> rectified photographs <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> walls, as well as <strong>the</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ed mapping <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erials <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> conserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USMs.<br />

All <strong>the</strong> above inform<strong>at</strong>ion files are stored on <strong>the</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

GeoD<strong>at</strong>abase, <strong>and</strong> enable users to c<strong>at</strong>alog <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a (in<br />

Italian <strong>and</strong> English) according to a structure corresponding<br />

to a subset <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields described by <strong>the</strong> ICCD (Central Institute<br />

for C<strong>at</strong>alogues <strong>and</strong> Documents, Ministry for <strong>the</strong> Cultural<br />

Heritage <strong>and</strong> Activities). There are also terminological<br />

dictionaries conforming to <strong>the</strong> ICCD Thesaurus. The tables<br />

are fully aligned with <strong>the</strong> ICCD d<strong>at</strong>a structure <strong>and</strong> can be<br />

exp<strong>and</strong>ed according to <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soprintendenza or,<br />

if necessary, by choosing a larger subset <strong>of</strong> fields for surveying<br />

archaeological elements.
