Principles <strong>and</strong> ideas for <strong>the</strong> future<br />
Twelve Principles spell out wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants felt<br />
should be <strong>the</strong> overriding concerns <strong>of</strong> all disciplines<br />
concerned with <strong>the</strong> conserv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> present<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
<strong>of</strong> Pompeii. They recognized first th<strong>at</strong> achieving sustainability<br />
for a site as complex as Pompeii is necessarily a<br />
multi-faceted program involving managing <strong>and</strong> striking a balance<br />
between <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> conserv<strong>at</strong>ion, territorial<br />
management <strong>and</strong> tourism.<br />
Those ideas for <strong>the</strong> future emerged from an even longer<br />
list <strong>of</strong> consider<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> actions. The essence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
consider<strong>at</strong>ions fall into six c<strong>at</strong>egories, including planning,<br />
research <strong>and</strong> document<strong>at</strong>ion, maintenance <strong>and</strong> conserv<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>ion, site management <strong>and</strong> policy, <strong>and</strong> goals for<br />
<strong>the</strong> next ten years. The first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se goals calls for a regular<br />
meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various disciplines <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essions working in<br />
Pompeii. Future symposia could develop specific agendas in<br />
order to address <strong>the</strong> most pressing issues, resulting in more<br />
detailed conclusions <strong>and</strong> recommend<strong>at</strong>ions for action.<br />
Twelve Principles Drafted <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> WMF<br />
Pompeii Symposium <strong>of</strong> November 2003<br />
1. Achieving a sustainable Pompeii is a combin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
conserv<strong>at</strong>ion management, territorial management <strong>and</strong><br />
tourism management.<br />
2. The main task <strong>of</strong> conserv<strong>at</strong>ion management is to manage<br />
change.<br />
3. Conserv<strong>at</strong>ion should be <strong>the</strong> ultim<strong>at</strong>e goal. All o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
interests, including tourism <strong>and</strong> commercial, should be<br />
taken into careful consider<strong>at</strong>ion but <strong>the</strong>y should not take<br />
precedence.<br />
4. A significant heritage site th<strong>at</strong> is completely closed to<br />
tourism will be even more vulnerable to deterior<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
italiano<br />
5. Accommod<strong>at</strong>ing modern life <strong>at</strong> sites such as Pompeii<br />
<strong>and</strong> Herculaneum is a conserv<strong>at</strong>ion action in <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
itself.<br />
6. Viable, constantly upd<strong>at</strong>ed conserv<strong>at</strong>ion plans are<br />
crucial to effective management <strong>of</strong> large heritage sites.<br />
7. Sites such as Pompeii are places <strong>of</strong> memory even more<br />
than <strong>the</strong>y are places <strong>of</strong> discovery <strong>and</strong> beauty: our<br />
conserv<strong>at</strong>ion interventions should keep this in mind.<br />
8. All conserv<strong>at</strong>ion projects should rigorously examine<br />
prior conserv<strong>at</strong>ion interventions.<br />
9. Given th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> houses <strong>of</strong> Pompeii <strong>and</strong> Herculaneum<br />
have been subject to many changes both during<br />
antiquity <strong>and</strong> since <strong>the</strong>ir discovery, all modern<br />
conserv<strong>at</strong>ion interventions should discuss <strong>and</strong> consider<br />
<strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se changes.<br />
10. The ruins <strong>of</strong> Pompeii are unique. In addition to <strong>the</strong><br />
wide range <strong>of</strong> ruins, <strong>the</strong> fine finishes <strong>and</strong> details were<br />
instantly encapsul<strong>at</strong>ed in a preserv<strong>at</strong>ive m<strong>at</strong>erial.<br />
Any conserv<strong>at</strong>ion intervention today must thoroughly<br />
research appropri<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> specific methods <strong>and</strong><br />
techniques to effectively conserve archaeological fabric<br />
when exposed.<br />
11. Sharing <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> investig<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> conserving<br />
<strong>the</strong> ruins <strong>of</strong> Pompeii <strong>and</strong> Herculaneum holds gre<strong>at</strong><br />
promise for educ<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> engaging <strong>the</strong> visiting public.<br />
More efforts should be made to exhibit <strong>and</strong> engage <strong>the</strong><br />
public in <strong>the</strong>se ongoing activities.<br />
12. A major objective <strong>at</strong> heritage sites such as Pompeii <strong>and</strong><br />
Herculaneum is educ<strong>at</strong>ion.
