CG is also a unique technique to present archived digital<br />

images vividly to a large audience. Based on detailed studies<br />

<strong>of</strong> real m<strong>at</strong>erials, CG can enable viewers to compare on a<br />

screen <strong>the</strong> present situ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> cultural heritage site with its<br />

hypo<strong>the</strong>tically-reconstructed image.<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> Julius Polybius in Pompeii has come to life<br />

again thanks to a long <strong>and</strong> elabor<strong>at</strong>e process <strong>of</strong> visual restor<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

To obtain <strong>the</strong> video, cre<strong>at</strong>ed in its entirety by Altair 4<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rome, a digital restor<strong>at</strong>ion was performed on tens <strong>of</strong> frescoes,<br />

as well as a virtual reconstruction <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> houses, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eruption <strong>and</strong> its impact on <strong>the</strong> house<br />

were enhanced.<br />

The complex restor<strong>at</strong>ion work has been illustr<strong>at</strong>ed with<br />

a three-dimensional technique which leads <strong>the</strong> user to view<br />

<strong>the</strong> rooms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house, in all <strong>the</strong>ir details, including <strong>the</strong><br />

exact position <strong>of</strong> every day objects, precisely as <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

found.<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> film is to give <strong>the</strong> visitor back a house th<strong>at</strong><br />

is still ‘alive’, just a minute before <strong>the</strong> c<strong>at</strong>astrophe, <strong>and</strong> to illustr<strong>at</strong>e<br />

its destruction <strong>and</strong> rediscovery. This narr<strong>at</strong>ion can,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, be considered exemplary for <strong>the</strong> entire ancient<br />

town.<br />

Some rare historical pictures showing <strong>the</strong> house <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

moment <strong>of</strong> its rediscovery have been superimposed <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>n taken away from <strong>the</strong> corresponding virtual images: this<br />

leap in time allows for <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> confronting <strong>of</strong><br />

wh<strong>at</strong> has really remained <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house <strong>and</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> has been<br />

virtually reconstructed.
