formal value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction elements <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir structural<br />

role. For example, Vitruvius’ comments on <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong><br />

beams are linked to how <strong>the</strong>y were seen from below, while<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> same time <strong>the</strong>y provide criteria for <strong>the</strong>ir structural<br />

dimensions. It is significant th<strong>at</strong>, ra<strong>the</strong>r than setting stiff <strong>and</strong><br />

fast geometrical rules (valid anyway) for <strong>the</strong> proportions<br />

<strong>of</strong> rooms <strong>and</strong> construction elements, Vitruvius mentions<br />

threshold dimensions th<strong>at</strong> make it possible to shift through<br />

different ranges <strong>of</strong> proportional rel<strong>at</strong>ionship.<br />

By <strong>the</strong>ir n<strong>at</strong>ure, <strong>the</strong> rules drawn up by Vitruvius, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

rules for ancient construction in general, ensure a firmitas (rigidity)<br />

th<strong>at</strong> does not require verific<strong>at</strong>ion by calcul<strong>at</strong>ions with<br />

regard to common masonry constructions. We are faced by<br />

<strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> structural calcul<strong>at</strong>ions are almost extraneous, if<br />

not actually inadequ<strong>at</strong>e, when applied to domestic masonry<br />

buildings.<br />

This project used refined calcul<strong>at</strong>ion techniques to show<br />

how firmitas is a characteristic <strong>of</strong> buildings th<strong>at</strong> belong to<br />

<strong>the</strong> historical heritage <strong>and</strong>, in this case, to <strong>the</strong> archaeological<br />

heritage.
