È evidente che per diverse ragioni, che vanno dall’attendere alle sensib<strong>il</strong>ità ambientali fino ai significati più strettamente educativi, queste macchine vanno riciclate per compiti ancora dignitosissimi quali la programmazione, l’informatica gestionale o addirittura funzioni di server web, ftp, news all’interno delle intranet scolastiche. Agli studenti amo citare l’esperienza di quei ricercatori americani che, vessati da una cronica carenza di fondi, hanno costruito una zuppa di computer (soupercomputer), adoperando processori superati e ottenendo a costo zero (o quasi) una macchina parallela di grande potenza (http:// www.esd. ornl.gov/fac<strong>il</strong>ities/beowulf/). Sul versante del software, deve aprirsi un confronto parimenti franco. Conviene l’acquisto di una macchina con processore dell’ultima generazione per vedersi caricare la versione più recente del sistema operativo e del word processor preferiti nello stesso tempo del vecchio ed amato 486? Ovviamente la risposta è no, se ut<strong>il</strong>izziamo la macchina solo per scrivere. Non v’è dubbio che per attività specialistiche, quali <strong>il</strong> rendering tridimensionale effettuato in un ITG (per fare un banale esempio), dobbiamo probab<strong>il</strong>mente affidarci a macchine potenti e aggiornate. Ma in molti altri casi, la vita media dei laboratori può essere allungata, senza venir meno alla loro valenza dei processi formativi. Esistono inoltre tanti sistemi operativi. Quello al quale molti insegnanti devono l’acquisizione di una pur minima cultura unix, oltre ad un impagab<strong>il</strong>e senso di libertà, è Linux. Un sistema Open source e gratuito, nato e cresciuto in quell’ottica collaborativa che può dare un senso profondo all’informatica educativa. Potente, flessib<strong>il</strong>e, sicuro, Linux non gode della stessa fama di altri sistemi operativi, nonostante molto possa dare proprio nel campo dell’informatica sostenib<strong>il</strong>e. Internet si fonda su un protocollo comune, <strong>il</strong> TCP/IP, un insieme di regole compatib<strong>il</strong>i con tutti i sistemi informatici. Se è vero, come molti analisti stanno prevedendo, che Internet si sostituirà ad una significativa quota degli ambienti d’apprendimento tradizionali, diventando un importante scenario d’azione didattica, sarà possib<strong>il</strong>e implementare alcuni tipi di formazione a distanza di terza generazione anche su piattaforme tecnologiche diverse e magari considerate “superate”. L’informatica è uscita da un ambito specialistico per offrire, con la multimedialità e Internet in particolare, potenti strumenti interdisciplinari. L’ut<strong>il</strong>izzo di un computer e di un certo software comincia ad assumere <strong>il</strong> significato che poteva avere <strong>il</strong> libro nell’era pre-informatica. In questo contesto è particolarmente interessante notare quanto, a fronte di un’attenta analisi degli insegnanti rispetto ai testi adottati, sia ancora acritico l’uso di un certo sistema operativo, di un programma, degli strumenti di rete. Tutto sembra buono per fare didattica con l’informatica, l’importante è “essere in Rete”. Quale vantaggio competitivo? I detrattori di quella che si sta configurando come una vera e propria corrente di pensiero, l’informatica sostenib<strong>il</strong>e, sono generalmente pressati da due errati convincimenti. Il primo è che la scuola deve fornire comunque e sempre <strong>il</strong> massimo delle dotazioni informatiche, proprio in considerazione dell’importanza dell’informatica nei processi dell’apprendimento. La critica è legittima, ma sottende un’idea chiara di qual è realmente <strong>il</strong> valore aggiunto dell’ut<strong>il</strong>izzo dei computer, della multimedialità e delle reti di computer a scuola. Ma a giudicare dalle modalità 92 e dal grado di ut<strong>il</strong>izzo dei laboratori scolastici tale chiarezza non è per niente scontata. Dotazioni aggiornate per fare cosa? La seconda categoria di affermazioni, più o meno dirette o sfumate, attiene la necessità che la scuola fornisca al ragazzo o alla ragazza un vantaggio competitivo dovuto alla capacità di ut<strong>il</strong>izzo degli standard informatici correnti. Non è infrequente sentire un insegnante proclamare che “è inut<strong>il</strong>e insegnare ad ut<strong>il</strong>izzare tale programma di office automation, perché non sarà quello che ut<strong>il</strong>izzerà sul lavoro”. Questa curiosa sorta di autolesionismo nella libertà di docenza, si interpreta fac<strong>il</strong>mente con l’ambiguità di fondo che confonde lo strumento con <strong>il</strong> processo. Restando attinenti all’esempio, la scuola deve formare gli studenti non a saper ut<strong>il</strong>izzare quel word processor, ma un word processor. Ancora, non tanto ad imparare a usare quel dato browser, ma a saper navigare in Internet. Non a ut<strong>il</strong>izzare quel dato editor HTML, ma a saper pubblicare in Rete <strong>il</strong> proprio pensiero in modalità ipertestuale. Esempio di semplice lezione sv<strong>il</strong>uppata ut<strong>il</strong>izzando Internet Lunedì mattina. La classe sciama tranqu<strong>il</strong>la in aula informatica. L’inevitab<strong>il</strong>e rumore di sedie trascinate e sbattute copre <strong>il</strong> placido ronzio del server, già acceso dal tecnico. Un po’ titubante, per ultima, entra la docente di Lettere. Questa mattina farà una lezione su Leopardi. Una lezione un po’ speciale, perché per la prima volta, spinta dalla presentazione in collegio docenti del progetto “Scuola&Telematica”, ha deciso di sfruttare le dotazioni informatiche dell’Istituto per creare un percorso didattico un po’ alternativo. Prima ancora che finisca di scrivere sul registro, parte la selva di guizzi elettromagnetici di monitor e PC in avviamento. I ragazzi impazienti aspettano. Inatteso, un problema. Il tecnico si accorge immediatamente che non c’è la connessione a Internet. La risoluzione, per lui semplice e banale, sta nell’accendere <strong>il</strong> router ISDN, spento per <strong>il</strong> fine settimana. La connessione appare molto lenta, <strong>il</strong> download di semplici gif appare estenuante. A questo <strong>punto</strong> <strong>il</strong> tecnico decide di far navigare i ragazzi in locale. Previdentemente infatti, si era premurato di scaricare le pagine dell’ipertesto con un software apposito. Non sarà come la consultazione on-line, per via della presenza di link esterni, ma la lezione potrà essere egualmente tenuta. L’insegnante sfrutta l’ipertesto per tentare di inquadrare un aspetto meno conosciuto dell’Autore, quello relativo agli scritti scientifici. Partendo dall’inquadramento cronologico dell’opera leopardiana, guida i ragazzi all’analisi di uno scritto di astronomia e di un trattatello di chimica. I ragazzi lo salvano in locale, aprono con un programma di videoscrittura <strong>il</strong> f<strong>il</strong>e e, per eliminazioni successive, tentano di farne un sunto commentato. A questo <strong>punto</strong>, proprio mentre suona <strong>il</strong> campanello, mandano in stampa <strong>il</strong> loro lavoro sulla stampante di rete. Questo potrebbe essere <strong>il</strong> racconto succinto di un lezione alternativa condotta con successo. Una lezione che ut<strong>il</strong>izza l’ambiente dell’informatica di rete per esplorare nuovi processi di insegnamento/apprendimento, magari nelle discipline più lontane dall’informatica stessa. Infatti, proprio grazie alla migrazione dall’informatica personale a quella di rete, l’uso del laboratorio di informatica sta uscendo da una ristretta cerchia di discipline per estendersi agli interi curricoli, assumendo una connotazione trasversale e interdisciplinare.
