CONSORZIO MARIO NEGRI SUD
The CMNS was founded in 1987 as a consortium between the Mario Negri Institute in Milan and the Chieti Province
authority, later joined by the Abruzzo Region authority. Scientific activities operatively began on September 1st 1987.
Since then CMNS has given a significant contribution to the advancement of research aimed at the prevention and cure of human
diseases. Based on a core of senior staff of around 80 scientists, the CMNS is also dedicated to training of predoctoral and
postdoctoral fellows, including an International PhD Programme.
Research at the CMNS covers three main areas of interest:
Basic morpho-functional and molecular studies of the organisation of the cell, as applied to the treatment of human disease.
Clinical epidemiology, as applied to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, other chronic diseases, and cognitive and behavioural
disturbances in the elderly. Health services research.
Analytical methodologies for comprehensive environmental monitoring.
CMNS provides a favourable and productive environment to its staff, students, and visiting scientists for the development of a critical
mass for scientific research. Scientists are supported by Core Facilities that provide centralized expertise and state-of the-art
technologies for several activities. The Institute also offers a PhD programme in Biomedical science and medicine in cooperation
with the British Open University.
There are currently 14 PhD students at CMNS and many more have successfully completed their post-graduate studies.
The PhD programme has enhanced the International atmosphere and outreach of the CMNS through the recruitment of talented
and promising students also from abroad and by promoting interactions and collaboration with international research groups.
