Stefano Cabrera è passato
dall’orchestra del teatro Carlo
Felice alla band strumentale pop,
fondando gli Gnu Quartet. Da allora
i successi e le collaborazioni
eccellenti non si contano: da Gino
Paoli agli Afterhours, da Simone
Cristicchi ai Baustelle, da Roberto
Vecchioni a Nathalie. Lo abbiamo
intervistato per saperne di più.
«La passione per la musica è sempre
stata trasversale. Fin dal liceo avevo
i miei gruppi rock: Iron Maiden,
Scorpions, Nirvana. Poi col teatro
cambiavo abito, ma sono sempre
stato piuttosto inquieto. Mentre
lavoravo con l’orchestra del Carlo
Felice è tornata a galla la voglia di
fare qualcosa di diverso. Ho
sviluppato le mie capacità di
arrangiatore per il teatro. Nel 2005
avevo scritto tutti gli arrangiamenti
di coro e orchestra per uno
spettacolo sui Beatles che è stato
realizzato in Piazza Matteotti a
Genova. La cosa che più mi ha fatto
credere nella mia passione è stato
l’incontro con gli Gnu nel 2006. Mi

Felice Opera House to a pop band,
the Gnu Quartet that he founded.
Since then his successes and
excellent works done in
collaboration are too many to
count: from Gino Paoli to
Afterhours, from Simone Cristicchi
to the Baustelle, from Roberto
Vecchioni to Nathalie. We interview
him to find out more.
My passion for music has always cut
across the categories. Ever since
high school I had my favorite rock
groups: Iron Maiden, Scorpions,
Nirvana. When I joined the Opera
House, I changed into a suit, but I
have always been rather restless.
While I worked in the orchestra at
the Carlo Felice, the desire to do
something completely different
gradually emerged. I had developed
my ability in arrangements at the
opera house, and then in 2005, I
wrote all the arrangements for the
chorus and orchestra for a show on
the Beatles which was performed in

a 40 anni, mi ritengo il musicista
che volevo essere: uso il violoncello
col distorsore, faccio rock e jazz».
Un bell’azzardo... Pura volontà o
anche sfiducia nell’ambiente del
teatro all’alba delle polemiche
che durano ancora oggi?
Sono stato un lavoratore a tempo
determinato nel ‘92 e poi ho vinto il
concorso nel ‘94. Fino a lì c’erano
grandi opportunità e si respirava
una buona aria. Ma poi i fondi
erano sempre meno e i privati non
ci finanziavano. Dal 2004 ho
iniziato a chiedere “aspettativa” e
non ho più vissuto il teatro
intensamente. Avere problematiche
così serie sul posto di lavoro si
riflette sulla qualità di quello che si
fa. I tagli hanno influito sulla
Genoa’s Piazza Matteotti. What
made me most believe in my
passion was my meeting with the
Gnu in 2006. I quit the opera house
in a great hurry to do my dream.
Today, at forty, I feel that I am the
musician that I wanted to be. And I
use the cello with a distorter. I do
rock and jazz.
An interesting chance
opportunity… Was it truly a
whim, or also distrust of the
opera house financial situation
which is still being discussed ad
infinitum now?
I had a temporary contract in 1992.
Then I won the employment
concours in 1994. Up till then it was
a great opportunity, and the
atmosphere was good. But then
money began to run out, and
private companies aren’t financing.
From 2004 I began to ask for
“sabbaticals”, and I stopped living
the Opera intensely. Having serious
problems about your employment
reflects on the quality of what you
do. The cuts have decidedly
influenced the quality of the
cultural offering.
And how was the Gnu Quartet
project born?
Pure chance. I have known the two
other musicians from Genoa,
Raffaelle Rebaudengo (the viola
player) and Francesca Rapetti (on
