Il golden gol l’ha segnato un chiavarese, il primo marcatore del match è
stato un savonese, la parata decisiva l’ha firmata un toscano (il pratese
Stefano Tempesti) che nel cloro del Tigullio è diventato il miglior portiere al
mondo.
Parla ligure l’oro mondiale dell’Italia di pallanuoto ai mondiali di Shangai di
luglio, conquistato ai supplementari contro la Serbia dopo un digiuno di
vittorie che durava da anni. Sette giocatori della nazionale azzurra - di fatto
l’ossatura della formazione del Settebello - giocano infatti tra le fila delle
prime tre squadre del campionato (e della Liguria), Recco, Savona e
Bogliasco, e cinque di loro sono nati sul mare nostrano. Non succedeva dai
tempi dell’oro mondiale di Alberani, Baracchini, Ghibellini, Ragosa e Fondelli,
datato 1978.
Le calottine liguri che hanno portato alla vittoria l’Italia sono Maurizio
Felugo, chiavarese del Recco, Matteo Aicardi, finalese del Savona, Arnaldo
Deserti, genovese del Bogliasco, Niccolò Figari, giovane genovese del Recco,
e Giacomo Pastorino, secondo portiere di Recco e nazionale. Compagni di
avventura in maglia azzurra che torneranno avversari dal mese prossimo,
quando ripartirà il campionato 2011-2012 e la caccia allo scudetto, cucito
ormai da sette anni sulla calottina della Pro Recco.
The golden goal was made by a water polo player from Chiavari, the first
marker of the match was a player from Savona, and the decisive block was
done by a player from Prato in Tuscany (Stefano Tempesti) who, playing for
Tigullio [the team named after the gulf off the coast of the Riviera], has
become the best goal-keeper in the world.
The gold medal winner of world water polo (at the World Cup in Shanghai in
July) is Liguria. Beating Serbia in overtime, Ligurian players finally took the top
spot after a hiatus of several years. The seven players on the Italian national
team – known as the Settebello (the beautiful seven) – are all players on
Liguria’s three leading teams, Recco, Savona, and Bogliasco, and five out of
seven were born on the Ligurian Sea. The last time this happened was 1978,
when Alberani, Baracchini, Ghibellini, Ragosa, and Fondelli, took the world
gold.
The native sons of Liguria who brought victory to Italy are: Maurizio Felugo,
from Chiavari in the Recco, Matteo Aicardi, of Finale in the Savona; Arnaldo
Deserti, Genoese in Bogliasco; Niccolò Figari, Genoese in the Recco team along
with Giacomo Pastorino, the second goal-keeper for Recco and the Italian
National Team. Companions in adventure with azure (the Italian team color) Tshirts,
they will be back in action next month at the start of the 2011-2012
Championships, battling for the cup, which for the last seven years has been
Pro Recco’s prize.

Contro il Cile sarà dura, ma la
responsabilità in più del gareggiare
per il proprio Paese aiuta, è un valore
aggiunto.
A fine luglio invece ha vinto il suo
primo torneo Atp, il doppio di
Umago, in Croazia, in coppia con il
compagno di nazionale Bolelli.
Che obbiettivi si deve dare, uno
che a 25 anni è tra i primi quaranta
al mondo?
Per ora non me ne pongo e penso sia
giusto così. Sembrano frasi fatte, ma
le uniche cose da fare a questa età
sono lavorare duro, fare esperienza e
continuare a migliorare. Poi, un giorno,
perché no, chissà che non sia
possibile entrare nella top ten. Nella
mia carriera ho già raccolto cose importanti,
come gli splendidi ricordi
dei match vinti al quinto set al Roland
Garros, ma prima o poi vorrei
vincere qualcosa di grande.
E nella vita privata?
È ancora un po’ presto per pensarci,
per ora penso a giocare. Però, come
tutti, punto a farmi una famiglia e
una bella casa dalle mie parti. Casa
mi manca molto.
In bocca al lupo e arrivederci da queste
parti, allora, campione pantofolaio.

What sort of life do you lead, as
you travel the world?
I’m sure you can imagine it.
Training, training, and more training
(though a bit less when you play in
a tournament, thank goodness),
athletic sessions, hotels, tennis
courts, airports. The only thing that
saves me is internet, where I stay in
touch with happenings in Italy. We
sportsmen seem always to be
alienated in another world – it’s
part of the job – but I like to know
what’s happening around me.
Playing on a hard court in
Santiago, from September 16 to
19, can you help Italy return to
the Davis Cup world?
The Davis Cup makes tennis into a
team sport; it’s a lot of fun to play
in it. It will be hard against Chile,
but the responsibility to compete
for your own country helps, it adds
value.
At the end of July you won your
first ATP tournament, the doubles
in Umago in Croatia, playing with
your fellow Davis Cup member,
Bolelli. What are the goals of a
24 year old who is among the
world’s forty top tennis players?
For the moment, I am not worrying
about this, and I think that is the
way it should be. It may sound trite,
but the only thing to do at
my age is to work hard,
get experience, and keep
on improving. Then, maybe
someday, who knows, maybe it
will be possible to enter the top ten.
In my career I have done important
things, but sooner or later I would
like to win something big.
And in your private life?
It’s a bit early to think about that.
For the moment I’m just thinking of
playing tennis. But someday I would
like to start a family, and have a
beautiful house of my own in my
hometown. I really miss having a
home.
