La strada prosegue verso Nord Ovest per 12 km
in direzione di Bajardo, superando il piccolo
centro di Isolabona.
Sale tra tornanti, sempre più stretti, fino a
quota 900 metri, dove la collina diventa quasi
montagna e gli ulivi del fondovalle hanno
lasciato il posto ai castagni. Bajardo è sicuramente
meno turistico e sofisticato degli altri
centri del fondovalle.
Il suo simbolo sono i ruderi della chiesa di San
Nicolò: danneggiata da un terremoto alla fine
dell’Ottocento, è in gran parte ancora in piedi
e contribuisce al fascino un po’ decadente del
paese.
Da qui in autunno si può godere dello spettacolo
del sole che scende tra le Alpi Marittime e
Liguri, che si elevano solo 10 km a Nord Ovest.
Se siete arrivati fino a Bajardo, sappiate che c’è
un posto davvero particolare dove fermarsi a
dormire: la Casa del Ghiro Sveglio, una piccola
abitazione che sembra una dimora di fate,
gnomi e folletti con stanze a tema tutte
diverse. Se avete dei bambini dategli un’occhiata,
è come entrare in una fiaba.

The road continues northwest for 12 km heading
to Bajardo, passing tiny Isolabona.
Climbing up the winding road, which becomes ever
more narrow, you finally reach 900 meters above
sea level. Here the hill becomes almost a mountain,
and the olive groves of the valley have been
replaced by chestnuts. Bajardo is surely less
touristic and sophisticated than the other towns.
Its symbol is the ruins of the Church of San Nicolò,
destroyed in an earthquake at the end of the
1800s, though still standing, lending a bit of a
decadent fascination to the town.
From here in the autumn you can watch the sun
set behind the Alps that rise up just 10 km to the
northwest.
If you make it to Bajardo, try to spend the night in
a rather odd place, the House of the Wakened
Dormouse, Casa del Ghiro Sveglio, a small inn
which looks like it was built for fairies, gnomes,
and elves, with rooms on theme. It’s like entering a
fable; children are spellbound.
