che irrompe dal cielo, Laiola la giovinezza perduta.
Per contro, Maurussu è il fuoco sacro dei
popoli primitivi, Scandolai, forza vitale dell’acqua,
simboleggia innocenza e purezza, Giaia la
musica e la poesia, Lenzari la giustizia, Maitò la
buona e oculata amministrazione, Bucurundu la
forza del pensiero, la scienza e la tecnica. Pregianca
è figura veneranda, depositaria dell’antica
sapienza, mentre Breglia è l’uomo, coi suoi
problemi, le sue vittorie e le sue sconfitte. E
l’elenco delle maschere buone e di quelle cattive
non finisce qui. Per ognuna, un’opera d’arte. Più
d’uno degli artisti ha preso spunto dai graffiti
presenti nell’unica sala d’incontro della borgata.
Ma esiste anche un altro piccolo tesoro culturale:
gli appunti che Tiglio ha scritto facendosi raccontare
dai vecchi queste storie piene di magia.
La ricerca si ferma agli anni Cinquanta: poi non
c’era più chi potesse raccontare questa tradizione.
I racconti, per fortuna, rivivono nelle maschere
in mostra a Pieve di Teco. Spiega il vicesindaco
Luigi Tangorra: «Qui da noi la gente viene soprattutto
per vedere l’ottocentesco teatro Salvini,
che, con i suoi 99 posti, pare sia tra i più piccoli
del mondo. Poi scoprono le Maschere».

forces of the Earth, like earthquakes. Leasse is the
fury that falls from the sky, Laiola, youthfulness lost.
Against these are Maurussu, the sacred fire of
primitive people, Scandolai, the vital force of water,
symbolizing innocence and purity, Giaia is music
and poetry, Lenzari, justice, Maitò, good and hidden
administration, Bucurundu, the force of thought,
science and technique. Pregianca, the venerated
figure holds all ancient knowledge, while Breglia is
man, with his problems, his victories, and his
conflicts. And the list of masks, both good and bad,
goes on.
For each, there is a work of art. More than one of
the artists has found inspiration in the graffiti
present in the one meeting hall of the village. But
there is also another tiny cultural treasure: the
notes that Tiglio jotted down as the old stories,
filled with magic, were told to him. His research
stopped in the fifties, because no one was left to
tell the tales.
But fortunately they live on in the masks on show
in Pieve di Teco. As Deputy Mayor Luigi Tangorra
explains, “Here most people come to see the 19th
century Teatro Salvini, which, with its 99 seats, is
apparently the smallest in the world. Then they
discover the Masks.”
