porto Carlo Riva di Rapallo, il
primo porto turistico nato in Italia, 25
dipendenti, 400 posti barca. Lo ha
voluto nel 1971 Carlo Riva che, alla
soglia dei 90 anni, ancora lo guida. Al
fianco di Marina, amministratrice
anche dello Yacht Club Rapallo, una
srl che gestisce la comunicazione coi
propri clienti sia quelli temporanei sia
gli utenti stabili dei posti barca. «Sono
cresciuta al di qua della sbarra del
porto, avevo 21 anni quando ho
cominciato. Come impiegata. Ero
l’ultima ruota del carro, poi nell’83
l’ingegner Carlo Riva mi ha “pescato”
e ha creduto in me. Tra l’87 e il ‘91
abbiamo impostato il porto che
tuttora funziona secondo quei criteri.
Certo con Riva si lavora non meno di
12-14 ore al giorno, ma ne vale la
pena».
Il porto Carlo Riva è piuttosto caro.
Sì è vero, ma ci sono ben 11 marinai
per 400 barche e garantiamo un
servizio sulle 24 ore, anche di
sicurezza. Il porto è piccolo ma
curatissimo, usiamo auto elettriche e
panne ecologiche in caso di
sversamento di carburante. Sono soci
i maggiori imprenditori italiani che
godono di una privacy assoluta.
Inoltre il ristorante dello Yacht Club
Rapallo è tra i migliore del Levante ed
è aperto anche ai non soci.
Questo piccolo tesoro
dell’imprenditoria privata sente la
crisi?
Sugli ormeggi piccoli ovvero sulle
barche da 8, 10, 12 metri. Per il resto
Marina Scarpino is the director of
Porto Carlo Riva, Italy’s first
tourist harbor. On the Riviera in the
Ligurian town of Rapallo, it has 25
employees and 400 mooring spots for
yachts. Carlo Riva willed it into being
in 1971, and now at 90 is still at the
helm. He works at Marina’s side, as she
also runs the Rapallo Yacht Club, an
s.r.l. company that deals with both
short-term and long-term mooring
spot users. “I grew up on this side of
the harbor. I was 21 when I started, as
a simple employee, the lowest of the
low. Then Engineer Carlo Riva scouted
me in 1983; he gave me my chance,
believed in me. Between 1987 and
1991, we set up the parameters that
are still working in the harbor. Of
course, when you work with Riva, you
work minimum 12 to 14 hours a day,
but it is worth it.”
Porto Carlo Riva is rather
expensive…
Yes, that’s true. But there are 11 fulltime
sailors for 400 boats, and we
guarantee a 24 hour service, which
includes surveillance. The harbor is
small, but immaculately kept: we even
use electric cars and ecological
absorbers in the case of fuel spills. Our
members are V.I.P. captains of industry,
who are given complete privacy. And
our restaurant at the Yacht Club
Rapallo is one of the best on the
eastern Riviera; it is also open to nonmembers.
Are business owners feeling the
world economic crisis?
Small boats - 8, 10, 12 meters - yes. For
no, molto meno per fortuna.
Come si vive e si comanda in un
ambiente così maschile? I direttori
donne dei 150 porti privati italiani
sono meno di dieci.
Io qui sto bene, ma non è certamente
un mestiere come un altro, si lavora 7
giorni su 7, i clienti hanno il mio
cellulare e sono sempre reperibile! La
vita privata è ovviamente sacrificata.
Ho una figlia diciottenne, Serena, che
credo e spero di avere seguito e
amato come una buona madre.
Comunque è ovvio che devi lavorare
più di tutti per essere credibile. Io ho
modificato il mio carattere da quando
ho la responsabilità di gestire porto e
Yacht Club. Infatti ho la nomea di
essere severa, quando passo la sbarra
scatta il tam tam tra i dipendenti,
perché sanno che controllo anche i
dettagli, che vedo persino una carta
per terra in banchina.
Allora passa per “cattiva”?
Speriamo non troppo. Sul lavoro
occorre dare molto, premiare chi si
impegna, riconoscere la fatica degli
altri. E io credo di farlo. Spero di saper
dare quanto Riva ha dato a me e a
tutti noi.

How do you live and give orders in
such a masculine environment?
Women private port directors in
Italy number less than 10.
I love my job. But it is certainly not a
job like any other…you work seven
days a week. Clients have my cell
phone number, and I am always on
call! This obviously means sacrifices in
one’s private life. I have an eighteen
year old daughter, Serena, who I love. I
hope and believe I have been a good
mother to her. But I must work harder
than everyone else to be credible. I
have changed my character ever since I
began to manage the port and the
Yacht Club. I am known for being strict,
and when I enter the port, the
employees spread the word, because
they know that I will check all the
details, that I even see a piece of paper
on the ground at the docks.
So they say you are hard?
I hope not too much. One must give all
for one’s work. And he who makes the
effort should be awarded, recognized.
And I think I do that. I hope to give as
much to others, as Riva has given to
me, and to all of us.
