Solo chi vuole conoscere l’anima della nostra regione,<br />
che nasconde i suoi tesori, scopre borghi<br />
sperduti nel verde, come Pignone, a 15 chilometri<br />
da Monterosso: un ponte in pietra dà accesso<br />
al centro medievale; nella vicina grotta<br />
della Resciadora furono rinvenuti resti di uomini<br />
e animali preistorici. Scavi archeologici hanno<br />
confermato qui un abitato preromano di liguri.<br />
Da vedere la pieve di Santa Maria Assunta ricostruita<br />
nel 1339. Proseguendo sull’Aurelia verso<br />
l’interno, dopo pochi tornanti ecco i resti delle<br />
mura di Beverino, borgo fortificato fondato dagli<br />
Estensi su un colle alto sul Vara.<br />
In direzione della Spezia, lungo la statale 330, si<br />
susseguono gli abitati di Bolano, la cui chiesa di<br />
Santa Maria Assunta conserva tracce dell’edificio<br />
gotico, mentre nel moderno abitato di Ceparana<br />
svetta la mole del castello Giustiniani; di Follo,<br />
con le sue case medievali e i mulini abbandonati;<br />
di Vezzano Ligure, diviso in due parti (entrambe<br />
medievali), una bassa con i resti delle<br />
mura, le torri, le case con archivolti e palazzo<br />
Giustiniani; una alta, con il sagrato a risseu del<br />
Santuario di Nostra Signora del Soccorso e il magnifico<br />
punto panoramico presso i ruderi del castello.<br />
L’ultima domenica di settembre, in occasione<br />
della Sagra dell’Uva, nei rioni addobbati a<br />
festa un corteo sfila in costume e i produttori<br />
vendono i prodotti della vendemmia. Sul lato<br />
opposto del fiume, Santo Stefano Magra sul<br />
confine toscano: centro agricolo dedito alla coltura<br />
dell’ulivo, merita un giro delle sue strette<br />
Da visitare a pochi chilometri dai porticcioli della <strong>Liguria</strong> di levante: le rovine<br />
dell'anfiteatro romano di Luni, Castelnuovo Magra e (nell'altra pagina) Pignone<br />
Very near the little harbors in eastern <strong>Liguria</strong>, and well worth the visit, are the ruins<br />
of the Roman amphitheater in Luni, Castelnuovo Magra and (next page) Pignone<br />

the towns hidden away in the greenery. One of these<br />
is Pignone, 15 kilometers from Monterosso. A stone<br />
bridge provides access to its medieval town center. In<br />
a cave close by, Grotta della Resciadora, traces of<br />
prehistoric man and animals are found. Archeological<br />
digs have confirmed that the town was inhabited in<br />
pre-Roman times by the <strong>Liguria</strong>ns. Also worth seeing<br />
is the church of Santa Maria Assunta rebuilt in 1339.<br />
Along the Aurelia, the old Roman road that skirts<br />
<strong>Liguria</strong>’s coast, heads inwards. A few bends lead to<br />
the ruins of the walls of Beverino, a fortified town<br />
founded by the Estensi on a hill high above the Vara.<br />
In the opposite direction, looking to La Spezia, follow<br />
the state road, S.S.330 to the little village of Bolano,<br />
whose church of Santa Maria Assunta conserves<br />
traces of Italian Gothic. Next on the route, rising out<br />
of the modern area of Ceparana is the majestic mass<br />
of the Castle Giustiniani. Follo has medieval houses<br />
and abandoned mills. Vezzano Ligure is divided into<br />
two medieval parts, the lower offers the ruins of the<br />
great wall that protected the town, towers, houses<br />
with vaulted passages, and Palazzo Giustiniani. The<br />
upper has the Sanctuary of Nostra Signore del<br />
Soccorso whose entry courtyard is paved in black and<br />
white sea pebbles, and whose magnificent panoramic<br />
viewpoint is next to the ruins of the castle.<br />
On the other side of the river, Santo Stefano Magra<br />
sits on the border with Tuscany. This agricultural<br />
center is dedicated to olive growing. It is worthwhile<br />
to take a walk in its narrow streets between its<br />
portals of gray sandstone. Just a few kilometers
