steel mills that for decades have
dominated its life. Conflict and
torment for the steelworkers,
housewives who organized
committees, union leaders,
institutions, entrepreneurs, first
public then private…all gravitating
around the steel mills, both loved
and hated, with the smoke rising
from its ovens and the emissions
from its coke processing just a few
meters from the houses. It all
made life in Cornigliano, if not
impossible, then, well, very
difficult.
Now the steel mills are smaller and
cleaner. The beautiful 18 th century
villa and the 265,000 square
meters (more than 2.7 million sq.
ft.) of area that was occupied by
the steel company, Italsider, have
been made new. And a page has
been turned for the suburb.
Enrico Da Molo, director of the
Società per Cornigliano – who is
handling the urban renewal, using
funds given by the government as
per the “program agreement”
which in its time was stipulated
between the locals, the
government, and the steel
company – thinks that the need
for fancy words to accompany the
changes are no longer necessary.
“Cornigliano can rapidly become a
normal quarter of a normal
middle-sized European city. A
place where one can live well. Not
too far from the center. With
reasonably-priced housing,
adequate services, and places of
recreation. Where young people
can come to live in the city
without spending too much; the
alternative being to head for the
villages in the hinterlands of the
province.”
The most exciting real estate
endeavor at the moment is the
restoration of 72 facades of
buildings in the old town center,
dating back to when Cornigliano
was separate from “Greater
Genoa” before the 1930s.
“We have learnt from Genoa’s

dall’”accordo di programma” a suo
tempo stipulato tra istituzioni locali,
governo e azienda -pensa che
non ci sia più bisogno di usare
grandi parole per accompagnare il
cambiamento. «Cornigliano
può diventare
rapidamente un
quartiere normale di
una media città europea.
Un posto in
cui vivere bene, non
troppo distante dal
centro e magari con
prezzi della case più
bassi, servizi adeguati
e occasioni di svago.
Dove si possano stabilire
giovani coppie,
senza bisogno di cercare
una sistemazione
alla portata
delle loro tasche nei
paesini della provincia».
L’operazione in questo
momento più
eclatante è il recupero di 72 facciate
dei palazzi nel centro dell’ex
Comune, che è stato aggregato
nella “Grande Genova” negli anni
’30. «Abbiamo imparato nel centro
storico - continua Da Molo -
quanto sia importante per l’identità
urbana e un maggiore agio dei
cittadini che la città sappia farsi
bella. Perché lo stesso principio
non dovrebbe valere per una periferia»?
Infatti l’Università di Genova – facoltà
di Architettura – ha prodotto
uno studio sulle tipologie dei palazzi
di Cornigliano, con la stessa
cura estetica e storica usata per il

makes itself beautiful. This idea is
also valid for Genoa’s suburbs.”
In fact, the Faculty of Architecture
of the University of Genoa has
done a study on the typologies of
the buildings of Cornigliano,
taking the same care, both esthetic
and historic, as they did when they
restored the medieval buildings in
Genoa’s old city.
And here’s another interesting
factoid for residents: an
architectural survey was done on a
territorial grouping of 209
residential buildings in Cornigliano
of which 48 satisfied the esthetics
criteria. And of their 301
potentially interesting facades, 72
were chosen.
That makes an impressive 1
architecturally important building
out of 4 – much more than
neighboring Sampierdarena.
The government-owned company
will finance 40%, to the tune of
3,152,000 euros out of a
comprehensive investment of 10
million euros, which includes
other work to be done in the old

è stato fatto un bando per
un ambito territoriale che comprende
209 edifici e le domande
soddisfatte sono state 48, per un
totale di 72 facciate sulle 301 potenzialmente
interessate, in pratica
un condominio su 4. Molto di più
di quanto si è verificato in altri
quartieri come Sampierdarena. La
società pubblica finanzia il 40%,
con 3 milioni e 152 mila euro ma
l’investimento complessivo sarà di
circa 10 milioni, dato che verranno
fatti anche altri lavori sugli stabili.
«Questo – osserva ancora Da Molo
– dice qualcosa di positivo sul
quartiere, spesso definito degradato
anche per la presenza di tanti
immigrati. Dimostra un attaccamento
