heads one of <strong>Liguria</strong>’s most lively and innovative cultural associations.<br />
It is based on volunteer work, and seeks its own sponsors<br />

Confindustria, cattolico impegnato<br />
nel sociale, ha deciso di mettersi<br />
a disposizione anche del mondo<br />
della cultura. Serio e rigoroso, capace<br />
di slanci ideali e di altrettanta<br />
concretezza nel portare avanti i progetti,<br />
Stefano Zara, alla fine si è lasciato<br />
convincere.<br />
Da un anno e mezzo, è il presidente<br />
del circolo “I Buonavoglia”, nato nel<br />
1996 da una idea della psicoterapeuta<br />
e scrittrice Gianna Schelotto,<br />
presidente onorario.<br />
Così Stefano Zara si trova a vivere<br />
nel mezzo di un mondo, quello della<br />
cultura, appunto, assediato dalla<br />
crisi, dai tagli, dalle difficoltà. Ma lui<br />
va avanti con soddisfazione. Perché,<br />
racconta, Genova, città schiva ma<br />
sorprendente, investe nella cultura<br />
come valore.<br />
Presidente Stefano Zara, com’è<br />
che si è ritrovato a guidare I Buonavoglia?<br />
Me l’hanno chiesto tutti quelli del<br />
consiglio del circolo, una ventina di<br />
persone, è stata una pressione molto<br />
forte, alla fine hanno votato al-<br />

S tefano Zara is the ex-president of<br />
Confindustria, the Confederation<br />
of Businesses. With a Catholic social<br />
involvement, he has decided to place<br />
his skills at the disposition of culture<br />
as well. Serious, rigorous, capable of<br />
launching ideas, with matching<br />
concreteness in carrying through the<br />
project, in the end, Zara allowed<br />
himself to be drawn into the club, I<br />
Buonavoglia – created in 1996 on the<br />
idea of psychotherapist and writer,<br />
Gianna Schelotto, its honorary<br />
president – and he has been its<br />
president for the last year and a half.<br />
This brought him in contact with a<br />
world, the world of culture, that is<br />
attacked by the world economic crisis,<br />
by spending cuts, by financial<br />
difficulties. But he ploughs through<br />
them all with satisfaction, because, as<br />
he explains, Genoa is a city that is<br />
both difficult and surprising, and it<br />
invests in culture as a value.<br />
President Stefano Zara, how did<br />
you find yourself at the head of I<br />
Buonavoglia?<br />
“I came at the request of all of those<br />
on the board of directors, twenty or so<br />

io ho accettato ma per un breve<br />
periodo: ho un mandato triennale.<br />
I Buonavoglia è sempre stato un<br />
circolo segnato dalla presenza femminile,<br />
mi piacerebbe, alla fine, riconsegnare<br />
l’incarico a una signora.<br />
Presidente e gentiluomo, dunque.<br />
Come definirebbe I Buonavoglia?<br />
Un circolo che a Genova ha avuto un<br />
ruolo molto importante, ha realizzato<br />
iniziative che poi sono state riprese<br />
da altri.<br />
Noi cerchiamo di alimentare la nostra<br />
capacità, anche se la concorrenza,<br />
e lo sottolineo con piacere, è fortissima,<br />
ci sono le Fondazioni, ma<br />
basterebbe pensare alle presentazioni<br />
di libri alla Feltrinelli o in altre librerie.<br />
Da Confindustria alla politica, ora<br />
alla cultura, assediata dai tagli. Un<br />
mondo difficile?<br />
Difficilissimo, noi Buonavoglia, siamo<br />
abituati a vivere senza grandi<br />
contributi pubblici, anzi abbiamo<br />
avuto un po’ di aiuto dalla Regione<br />
solo in occasione della serata d’ono-<br />
people, all putting me under pressure.<br />

and I accepted, but just for a brief<br />
period, for three years. That was at the<br />
end of 2009. I Buonavoglia is a club<br />
that has always had a strong female<br />
presence, and so, I would be happy to<br />
turn the charge over to a lady.”<br />
So, a president and a gentleman.<br />
And how would you define II<br />
BBuuoonnaavvoogglliiaa?<br />
“As a club that in Genoa has played a<br />
very important role. It has begun<br />
initiatives that have then been taken<br />
up by others. We seek to add to our<br />
capabilities, even if the competition –<br />
and I underline this with pleasure – is<br />
very strong. There are the Foundations,<br />
but also the presentation of books.”<br />
From the head of the business<br />
Confindustria to politics, and now<br />
to culture which is besieged by<br />
spending cuts. Is this a difficult<br />
world for you?<br />
“Oh, very difficult, but we, at<br />
Buonavoglia, are used to living<br />
without great public subsidies. We<br />
received a bit of help from the<br />
Regione only on the occasion of the
Change language
